Cheap Chinese Knockoff Faucets on eBay and elsewhere - any good?
Comments (12)You can buy every type / brand model faucet on ebay or online in general these days... so, it's not the sales / distribution channel that determines whether or not the faucet it garbage or not. It is the brand... and ultimately price that does. From birth we've all heard the saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." And nowhere is this more true than plumbing and lighting fixtures. I've been building new and renovating old houses for over 25 yrs and I can assure you--as someone who has bought, installed, replaced, and returned countless faucets and light fixtures--that you get what you pay for in construction. In fact, I rarely use anything but Kohler plumbing fixtures anymore--since (a) I have never had to replace one and (b) they have an extremely generous warranty and repair parts policy--though they are generally on the more expensive end of the spectrum. Without exception, any cheap, Chinese made faucet that you install will have to be replaced within a very short time period if it gets any regular use. And it will be difficult if not impossible to find repair / service parts for it. As opposed to Kohler, for example, which supports their products virtually forever. So, you not only have to consider the up-front costs... but the long term costs--and the very real potential for damages that a cheap fixture that fails can cause in your home. Unless you're a handy-man / DIY type--who can install, replace, and repair your own plumbing--these legacy costs will easily be more than the difference in price between that cheap foreign knock off and a good Kohler fixture. And Kohler just makes better looking stuff anyway. If you can't find a Kohler product that works perfectly for your project--you're doing it wrong. They avoid cliche and short term trends--opting for a more classy, classic product line up--that "ages" well stylistically. But they have beautiful options for all segments of the style spectrum--from neo-classical / traditional to ultra-contemporary to industrial. All you have to do is pick up a Kohler faucet in one hand and pick up a cheap knock off in the other to notice the difference between them; the Kohler will likely weight twice what the cheaper faucet does. And that extra weight is more brass and thicker, better plating, etc....See MoreExcessive Contingencies Even in Buyer's Market?
Comments (50)berniek - actually, the agent did try to get them to negotiate, but the seller was so PO'd that their mind was absolutely closed to any other negotiation from the buyer who made the offer. When teh realtor approached the seller about a new offer, they flat out refused. They just didn't want to deal with the hassle that these people created. So, in essence, the realtors did try, seller said screw it....See MoreBuy first? Sell first?
Comments (20)Sell first. We recently put money down towards a new build out of state. Our home is on the market. But the market is slow. The good news is we have a year to sell bc our builder will not be available to us until next May 2014. He only builds one home at a time. In order to book him, we had to put money down towards a new home on our lot. (we bought the lot in 2004 and it is oficially paid for) In the meantime, we are flexible and can move out as soon as the buyer wants and rent a home near where ours will be built or we perhaps we can rent this one back from the buyer. One way or the other, we felt it was better to sell first, but we have already laid out money towards the build and the clock is ticking!...See More'cannot in good concsience sell me soapstone'???!!!
Comments (25)WOW!! Thank you all so much! The renters or squatters I should say really did some insane stuff here are a couple examples....they actually removed my upper cabinets all together. They put them BACK UP in the master bedroom screwed them right into the brand new drywall with drywall screws...I am just glad they were evicted before any more "construction" took place. Also they had a ferret...Not sure if you have ever smelled a ferret but it is unpleasant to say the least. When we moved in I stripped and scraped the old windows for days and days repainted everything the trim was amazing...they screwed them all shut with drywall screws they loved drywall screws. So yes they screwed us financially and they also prevented our family from living together after a year long deployment to Afghanistan b/c the house was still under construction. So anyways I just cannot thank you all enough for your input and thoughtful answers I am a homebody and have three children under three years so my kitchen is where I live. I have been lurking around this site for months and months looking at posts about soapstone and white shaker cabinets. I never imagined such amazing responses! I have a lot to think about.... We are having our cabinets custom built by a local cabinet maker. I priced them at a local lumberyard Kraft maid and got a price of $5,500 Lowes was $7500 and the Cabinet maker was $10,000. When I told the cabinetmaker we couldn't afford it he threw in installation so we decided to go for it. We convinced ourselves that they would hold up better to the abuse. But really I think once my husband saw the cabinet makers shop he fell in love. The soapstone that I want is the dark type with no veining and will be pretty much out of my price range... I have seen a lot of laminate in basalt slate and soapstone looks. Some that I loved in pictures... but up close I really really hate the edges of laminate. I also don't like the edge of an overmount sink. And those new wedges they are doing is not something I like either. I left the store yesterday with Absolute black polished granite. I have been reading other posts and seem to think what I might want is Jet black Cambria antiqued finished. The absolute black seems to be a problem for people with fingerprints and every little smudge showing. HMMMMMMM........ This would be a lot easier if I was debating about what I wanted I know EXACTLY what I want but it seems like it is impractical for our lifestyle....I really really really LOVE soapstone every single thing about it... Why can't the local high school be ripping out their old science lab right now... that would be perfect. And then I think about the meth lab point and with our luck that just might be our next tenants profession. Seriously though thank you all so much. I will definately be posting pictures soon! But here is one of my temporary kitchen just for the fun of it :)...See MoreJeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor
