Offshoots from a cut down tree
Comments (6)Named varieties of trees are seldom grown on their own roots. They are grafted on to rootstocks. This is to ensure that the exact variety is being sold and also because very often the variety has week roots that may not sustain the plant. The rootstocks are usually of the same species but are selected for their strong root growth or other desired trait. As your ornamental graft got sick and died the rootstock survived and took over. The rootstock will not be as ornamental as the variety. It will probably have the usual white cherry blossoms and will probably produce fruit that will have little value, except as bird food. It may also put out sucker a good distance from the original tree. Three years ago, we moved into our current house. There was a large, mature Shirofugan cherry in the front yard. Since the tree had only gotten natural watering for a couple years, the rootstock had sent out runners to maximize its water gathering capacity. Then the roots produced suckers. These showed up more than 10 feet beyond the drip line of the original tree. They made the lawn unusable and unsightly. This year I cut the tree down and gave the wood to a woodworker. Cherry is a beautiful wood. I am taking care of the sprouts with Knockout and have replaced the Cherry with an Emerald City tulip tree. After all that, if you are curious, let grow for a few seasons. Comments (11)I used some green onions from the store. I don't like the white part, it's a little too acrid for me. I was getting ready to toss them and realized there's roots on the end. so I just stuck it in one of the net pots in my hydro unit. a week later I had green leaves shooting up about 6 inches. I did that with the remaining onions I had bought and now I have an unending supply of green onion. whenever I want some I just go out and cut off a couple of leaves. most of the onions have leaves about 2 feet long now....See MorePlants successfully started from cuttings
Comments (12)Hi Oldman I apologize for taking so long to reply, because I couldn't figure out why I put "Stephanotis" on my list. So when I got a chance to go outside today, I looked at my plant to see what's up with it....and that's when I remembered the "Stromanthe" plant nearby. I got those two names mixed up. Anyways, have you ever air-layered your Stephanotis? That's how I get the Stromanthe to root at the stems that produce little babies. They never rooted if I cut them off, but they do if they're stuck in the dirt while still attached to the mom. So I am going to try that with my Stephanotis this spring where I see little roots forming along the vines. (Although, I don't really need another stephanotis plant and the one I have is not likely to survive our cold winter cuz I'm not dragging it in again this year.) Comments (46)Kara, it was really nice to find, even if it isn't accurate, at least by how they're named now. It got me to find out that it's really a Haworthiopsis coarctata v. tenuis. The other old label I found was Aloe descoingsii x A. hawothioides. Rina, I didn't even really realize it was etiolated until Pagan told me. He also said this variety likes sun, or at least brighter light than many other ones. So it will be pretty much brown, but I'd rather have that and it be more compact. I'd be happy if they look as good as yours, even if it isn't a plant I especially like. The old plant is tired and I don't know if it will produce any more offsets, but I'll repot it. Yellow pothos, it's finally growing... thank goodness for the recent rain.
I rooted this Lancaster about 7 years ago, it looked just like the other cutting in the little pot.
I often root pieces of Return of Beauty if there is interesting variegation. :)
