Good and quiet Dishwasher - recs?
Comments (38)I know this is a little late in posting, but I wanted to actually use it for a while before reporting back. We finally got it installed a little over a month ago and I'm so far very happy with it. We got the SHE68T56UC as I couldn't find enough differences with the 800 series that I cared about. It is very quiet, it fits way more stuff than my old dishwasher did, it doesn't dry things quite as good as I would like, but plastics are no different than the old one. The one drawback I do have is that my tall pot doesn't fit unless I rearrange the racks which to me is more of a pain than washing it by hand. Dishes comes out way cleaner and my glasses that had some kind of white haze that I thought was etching are returning to looking clear again. I only switched the dishwasher - not the detergent. It does take about an extra 40 min than my old dishwasher, but it hasn't bothered me as I can fit so much that at times I end up putting some stuff in and running it not completely full as there isn't enough space to fit more plastics for example or glasses in the top and the bottom isn't fully filled. I have yet to be left with anything on the counter to feel like it is taking too long to run so I can load it again. Edit: Forgot to add that I don't pre-wash the dishes except to scrape off large stuff, but DH does pre-wash, although he is starting to come around. So each wash is a mix of the two. Hopefully I can get a chance to test out it with nothing pre-washed at all, but I think it will perform well. I took the wash filter out to clean as the installer said to do it if things started to smell. It didn't smell, but I figured I'd make it a monthly thing just so I it wouldn't get there. There was nothing in the filter so really didn't need to do it. I'm sure as I go along I'll figure out how often it will need to be done. Comments (5)I've had my LG 5001CW for about 3 months. There are some reviews on the web from owners who want hotter water. I'm OK with it (haven't measured the temperature) The manual indicates (page 22) that there is a "built-in water heater booster" but machine never seems to get hot, even on the hot cycle. Since I usually wash with cold water, this is not an issue for me. I don't have trouble with getting stains out by presoaking in warm water with Oxyclean. We've turned our water heater temp down to what we can stand in the sink/shower. The dishwasher has a water heater and uses much less water than a washer, so this is a good solution for us. The "Wave Force" feature works with loads of 8 pounds or larger (page 14) so it's worthwhile to save up the laundry and wash all at once. Wave Force is something to see. It pulls the water through the load by centrifugal force using a high speed spin and then it sprays that water from above as the water rises and fills the outer tub during the spinning. Like a circumferential shower. Regarding capacity, we are empty nesters and I initially thought the huge capacity would be overkill. But even without kids at home I still wash towels, bathroom rugs, comforters and other other bulky items. Glad I bought the big capacity machine. Your kids will come home from college with piles of laundry and you won't be sorry about the larger capacity. Another consideration: FP has the highest repair frequency of any reported in Consumer Reports while LG has a 10 year warranty on the motor. I only bought the washer. My trusty Maytag gas dryer is going strong after 13 years....See More18" dishwasher worth it in small kitchen?
Comments (9)We rent in napa at least twice a year as it is driving distance from bay area. I think a dishwasher is a must have if your rental accommodates 6 people or more.. Then families have kids and may prefer to eat home home (eating out for all meals in napa can add up fast). Doing a round of dish washing by hand takes away from the precious vacation time. I would also suggest a single dish drawer instead of an 18 in as there are severe limitations to what can fit in the 18in. You cannot wash big pasta pots etc....See MoreWhat better for a small kitchen, portable or 18" built-in dishwasher
Comments (10)There is no easy solution. A portable dishwasher would be a drag to use and take out and store - and then the sink is being used to drain the water. An 18" dishwasher is quite small so you undoubtedly have to do multiple loads all the time. I live alone but when I cook a "real" meal I often can't fit everything for prep and cleanup etc. in my full size dishwasher. If there is any money in the budget, I would contact a cabinet maker to see if you can change out the cabinets so that one is 24" for the DW and the sink cabinet is smaller. As others have posted, a smaller single bowl sink with a dishwasher would provide way more functionality than your current double bowl sink. ETA - Honestly if your choice is 18" or portable 24" then I would just opt for hand washing while you save whatever is necessary to modify cabinets for the 24" built in dishwasher. With the 18" you are going to wind up hand washing almost everything anyway. With the portable, the logistics are so terrible that hand washing would be more convenient and you would probably wind up hand washing rather than hauling it out and setting it up a lot of the time. I had my Cuisinart stored in an inconvenient place and I often decided NOT to make something using it because I didn't want to deal with hauling it out and putting it back in....See Morevicbayside
