ZZ Plant...Cuttings?
Comments (39)Hi Christina, Yes, it should grow, especially if it's an entire branch. I did this last Spring (as I wrote earlier in this thread); someone gave me a whole single branch w/ 7 pairs of leaves on it. I placed it in a vase of water & over a month or so it grew what looked like a small green pea-sized ball. That's the tuber, there were also a couple of small white roots w/ that. Once I had that, I took it out of the vase of water & potted it up in mix, but didn't water too often, maybe every 10 days or so. After a while (month or 2) it threw a small shoot, which turned out to be a new branch (or stem) w/ a pair of leaves on it. As Toni suggests, it may go a bit more slowly now as it's not the preferred time of year to do this, but it should work. Pls. be patient & once you pot it up, don't water it too often. If for some reason the visible part of the plant dries up, don't toss it, the tuber is usually still active below the mix where we can't see it & can still produce a plant. You just need to be really patient w/ this, but it WILL happen....See Morequestion about repotting ZZ plants
Comments (23)yep, i read exoticrainforest site too and put them in dappled sun light and when they were producing sev stalks started watering a LITTLE more. and guess what? got yellow leaves pretty soon - tubers started rotting. it prolly is like sansevieria - IF you put it in 90-95F and in partial sun it can be watered well. but that's a very big IF. if you don't have temps over 80F - don't water it more. and certainly not in winter, when most people have cooler conditions. you def need to let it fully dry out to the bottom before you water. look at my plant - how densely the leaves are set and how fat the bases of stalks are. too much water produces weak spindly 'soft' growth (unless you have above-mentioned hot conditions)....See MoreTa-Da!! - Presenting my ZZ plant
Comments (16)Yay! I *LOVE* my ZZ plants--I have been trying to spread the word on what excellent house plants they are! I have two large ones in my house that I water, oh, about once a month. They need hardly any care, and do so well with even low light. I have even noticed that they exude a little moisture on the leaves like a natural leaf-shine...is that a great houseplant, or what? I would just advise fertilizing after a flush of new growth (right around the new year) to keep everything shiny and dark green. Definitely one of my top 10!...See MoreA ZZ plant propagation to share
Comments (9)Thx Nick, that's probably abt how often I water too, maybe twice a month. I don't fertilize much or often. I think I recently did as I just fertilized most of my plants given the arrival of Spring. Here' s my original plant started from single leaf. I have forgotten how old this is. I noticed one of the older stems has thickened up. This is the first time mine has done that. I believe it happens w/ age, the older, larger ones that one sees in the store have that. A closer look in the lower right shows the tuber which has pushed itself up in the mix becoming visible, which it hadn't been when last repotted....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
