I would like to try Newberry too, which I would need to protect! Hey anti-desiccant spray. It might work well enough no other protection would be needed? I have heard it does work. I'll leave some canes exposed to see. My Carmine Jewell are 2nd leaf. The first year at my cottage, hardly any growth. Dug them up, potted them brought them to the city (I have two). They are both about 30 inches doubling in size. And only fertilized once. Amazing what good light can do. My report on Black Diamond, Columbia Star, mean little, new plants. All of my 2nd year blackberries grow crazy mad! Well most. The Boysenberry is growing 20 foot canes. I had to cut them, they were going two plants over! TC, and Chester growing very well, Natchez, another that is an amazing grower, and hardier than TC or Chester btw, one cane survived and is producing fruit. TC and Chester, all canes died. Navaho looked dead, but around July 1st it threw some canes up. Very small for 2nd year, but it's alive. Loganberry crown died from the cold. Tayberry crown made it. Produced a few berries as a few inches of the floricanes was alive. One other comment. I have seen Natchez rated as good, not excellent. So I was pleasantly surprised how good the berries were. I liked them, not bad at all. It may be this environment works well for that cultivar. It grows faster than any other blackberry here. I almost pulled it too after seeing the rather average taste reports. One really needs to try plants first.

basic, Your tree looks as healthy in the photo as mine did all last year, as long as I kept it watered during our drought. Mine broke dormancy nicely, early on this April, was shocked over a three day Easter period this year, with nights dipping down into the light freeze temp range. During that same time on the third day, the tree also endured a few hours of hard freeze. Since I had wrapped it over each night it did not freeze immediately, but after the warm-up it seemed to go dormant; eventually dropping is leaves. It did later releaf a little bit, but just never could do it completely. Now, even though there is still green under the bark, the new leaves are dead. From my early on experience with my tree, I would think that your tree should survive the summer heat if you water it properly. After seeing where botann's tree is planted and growing so well, I have concluded that the last 8 weeks of our constant rains is what has caused my tree to suffer so much that it is at risk of never recovering. The clay soil here simply does not drain fast enough, and I figure that my mound where I planted it was not raised high enough to prevent the roots from drowning and quite possibly rotting. Your photo appears to show that your land slopes, if ever so slightly, and that has given me a better idea of how to plan needed adjustments to my, newly arriving just this week, tree's planting bed. Today, I went to my favorite nursery and purchased some well draining potting soil they use especially for their potted trees. Hopefull my new tree will have developed and grown well enough by my repotting it whenever needed and by the time I want to plant it; in the newly planned bed, next spring. I read this thread and kind of marvel. The effort people expend to grow plants in a hostile climate. I bought a $5 sago 40 years ago when I bought my house, it is over six feet tall The male flower is (like) two feet long, every year for at least the past 15 years. A flush consists of at least two dozen fronds , (or leaves) if you prefer. I have successfully raised and given away probably three dozen pups broken off from the parent plant. Most survive, maybe 80% but some don't. It gets cold here, we are at 1700 ft. elevation and freezes some years but I have never had a sago show damage from frost. Plumaria, that's another crap shoot, but the sagos do very well here. I have managed to keep twenty pups that are well established and in the ground. In other words, this climate is very agreeable for sagos and they are common all around here, seems like everybody has at least one? I'm not rubbing your nose in it here; I salute the effort to grow (what is almost a tropical), in a climate which is not suitable. Good luck.
