Comments (10)I'll try to play catch up. (Have been travelling for a little more than a month in the past 40 days. Much of that was without Internet so more absent than I thought might happen.) The drawing is pretty basic but hopefully it will convey some ideas. First, I would get rid of the odd angles on the beds. They would look much better to tie in to walks at 90* angles instead of weird wedge shapes. In the lower, right corner I'm illustrating two ways you could make a circular bed around the lamp post. (The lamp post is a primary purpose of the bed so the bed ought to use the post, at least roughly, as the radius point. And a generally circular shape would make more sense than a sprawling asymmetrical wedge shape.) Also, I would re-shape the large front bed. It should swell out to accommodate the tree you intend to plant but does not need to extend outward, around the walk in a grabbing fashion. To explain the planting in the illustration, it is a shrub below each window of the garage, and a small hedge below the pair of windows (right half). None of those should get taller than bottom of the window. There is seasonal color flanking the entrance to the porch and at the left of the porch. A perennial mass wraps the garage corners and right house corner. A low groundcover, solid, links the other plantings together. Can't tell how your existing tree would possibly conflict with the proposed tree. (The third picture you posted was taken from a different position so the existing tree location shown could be seriously misleading.) You might want to consider moving the proposed tree farther back in the scene rather than placing it at a pure diagonal to the house corner. (I wouldn't know because we don't have the information.) A large shade tree is probably not in order. A flowering tree (such as redbud) might be a better size to use so close to the house. As far as what plants to use, gauge the heights and research what plants grow locally that could perform well....See MorePlease Help me design new kitchen in my 1983 home
Comments (31)Thanks everyone! Sena01, thank you, I am trying the cabinets in front of the duct wall also. Pulling out the Fridge wall would give me issues with the ceiling grid area though. damiarain, thanks so much, we think its pretty cool too :) You have a really nice plan and what you and cpartist have made looks like a good workspace. PirateFoxy, thanks, I have the same thoughts about the fridge placement. Ok here are my issues. I would prefer to vent outside, keeping the cooktop on the outside wall. Everyone seems to agree I should lose that doorway from elevator and I get it, I just would prefer to find another way around that. This plan pulls everything to the dining room/entry area and my goal was to expand into the family area and pull the work areas that way a bit. Perhaps moving the ovens, move the fridge to the left and make a 28" counter there? Make a peninsula off the exterior wall on the other side of the cooktop? The family room space I really want to become part of the kitchen, with a desk and an eat in area. When you walk up onto this main floor you walk into the dining area looking right at where the fridge is placed in this plan. This counter area, left of the sink, I am imagining open with maybe shelves, no uppers. Keeping the counters open near the sink and window. So when you look at it like this, I think you will agree that it should be open with no appliances there. I really appreciate as much input as I can get, thanks so much!...See MoreClosing on a new build home, overwhelmed, please help me decorate
Comments (12)I want to put a table and chairs there but it looks like the builders installed the light fixture off centered. I suspect they placed it off center to allow for a walking space between the dining table and the island. If you don't care for the fixture -- and I don't either, so plain, doesn't coordinate with the island pendants -- change it, but I would not change the location. Furthermore, if you change the location, you'll probably have to "swag it", and I doubt that's the look for which you're searching. I recommend moving in and actually placing your dining furniture to determine the scale and room needed. Good advice. Go ahead and place your existing table ... then you can judge whether you need something larger /smaller /different shape. Do Nothing now. That "dining space " is too small to be considered one, unless a table for two under the window. Oh, come on. It's not a huge space, but it can certainly hold more than a two-top....See MoreHelp me and my new to me house -decor decisions
Comments (80)Thanks Tartan- I was hoping you would see this. Yeah, the thing is for the offwhite it's in the reviews that people mention it is more of a gray than a cream... I can't tell. I know originally we felt that off-white was the way to go. The depth on this one, chatham is great (it' s the skinniest one of all the ones I considered). The reviews are outstanding- but the color scares me and the mahogany, looks good. Although my coffee table and end table are wood ( I think fruit wood). The size thing came up because I keep seeing suggestions that the console under the tv should be about 1/4 to 1/3 larger than the TV. The tv on that wall is not really centered on the wall- there is a light switch which I kind of didn't include in the wall. It was the outstanding decorators above, Flo and others who said I should go about 52-55 inches wide. Help me out, the TV is a 50 inch (diagonal) so the width is about 44 or 45 inches. !/3 larger would be 60 inches, 1/4 larger woudl be 55 inches. The Chatham is 52/53 inches. You see why I can't decide anything? I did use tape to see and I will post those pix here. This is 52 inches And here is 60 inches. Do I have the tv stand butting up to the window or leave room like I have done? FWIW, the kitchen is my other next project so while it adjoins the living room and all, who knows what color wood I will have there. (debating wood vs off white. that should take me maybe another year to decide lol). Originally a few said that I shouldn't go for more wood tones, so that keeps me back to the off white. What do you think? I will repost some of the pix of the room that are further upthread. This below is across from the TV wall. other wall with fireplace. So what TV stand belongs in my room that I will be happy with? How's your clairvoyance working??:)...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
