Laminate flooring uses a transition strip to go from one floor to another. You can purchase them to match your flooring. It has a metal strip that goes between the laminate and your other flooring and the strip snaps into that metal strip. The transition strips can be from a slight height difference, or the type to go from a different floor to the laminate, even though they are both the same height.

Every instructional video I see, shows simply nailing the bullnose to the top of the stairs and butting the laminate up to it or overlapping them. I can't do that because the top of my stairs has somewhat of a bullnose under the carpet - same thickness as the subfloor. My guess is that I need to remove this piece and replace it with a squared piece. But Im hoping my guess is wrong and there is another way...

Your floors my professional will handle all of the details. But that won’t work on your stairs issue. You need all wood.

A flooring professional would pop off this piece, trim it up (rip it lengthwise to square it off) and then reinstall it. Install floor and nosing and go home. Done. Like. Dinner.
