Comments (13)Tomplum is spot on there. I have repaired "worst case" problems (where plastic connector melts or breaks) by replacing the connector assembly with individual, insulated wire spade terminals. But using the individual terminals means you have to be absolutely certain you understand exactly where each wire is supposed to go. To release a spade terminal from the connector body, insert a small screwdriver into the business end of the connector (in the direction indicated by red arrow) to depress the locking tab that secures the terminal to a lock notch in the plastic. While holding the locking tab down with the release tool (screwdriver), gently pull on the wire at the back end of the connector. If the release tool is in place properly, and the connector is not melted, the wire and terminal will slip easily out of the connector. I have also had success with just cleaning and tightening the terminal by ever so slightly closing the gap of the terminal with a small pair of pliers. Cleaning can be done using a small, stiff sliver of sand paper inserted into the open end of the terminal, but it requires patience. If the terminal has a dark or blackish appearance, don't even try to clean it.....it has been hot and is no good now. Replace it....See MoreMystery about a ground wire (photo)
Comments (3)The ground wire might be hiding behind the j-box in the ceiling. If you cannot find it there, just take the ground from the fixture and connect it to the green screw. The j-box will act as the grounding source. Seems like the previous owners figured that as well....See Moremysterious electricity hog?
Comments (10)Fior a 30 day billing period that averages out to ~107 amps at 240 V continuously. A meter mis-read could be the cause. An electric water heater is normally protected by a 30 A 240 V breaker, so even if it was completely on the whole time it would barely be 28% of the power on the bill. Are you sure there are not other new account charges on the bill? Or it is for more than one month? I have seen first new bills be high since they start charging on the day ownership changes, but the billing department lags enough the bill covers almost 60 days....See MoreMystery Electrical Circuit
Comments (6)I fear that experience has turned me into a misanthrope. The comment about the installer came from an experience on a volunteer rush house building project. 8 men were going to do the electrical in an afternoon and as much of the night as necessary. At least 3 were licensed contractors and two of the others were people who thought they knew much more than they did-- if you know what I mean. Two circuits connected together in wall box in bedroom-- cost me a ruined pliers plus nasty shock twice while trying to find the problem. Wall boxes all over the house with blank covers because the circuits simply did not work. I told the lead man that we needed to test everything before the drywall went up-- but he did not agree. I always test my own work while the walls are open. Some do not like the delays that involves....See More- 4 years ago
