Need room dimension advice and photos of cathedral/vaulted ceilings
Comments (22)Cubes where the room is not wider or longer in at least one direction than the ceiling is high are not particularly comfortable, similar to how large rooms with low ceilings are not particularly comfortable. In a cube, the room tends to start feeling shaft like, where a large room with a low ceiling often seems to sag or press down in the center. Also, cubes are static and rectangles are not. It might be better if the ceiling was 15-16 if 24 is the largest dimension of the room. Peaks are a little different. I lived in an apartment where the original parlor floors were essentially a golden rectangle. They had been lofted at one end (about 1/3 of the space) and it made the high ceiling in the remaining area kind of elevator shaft-like. The apartments that maintained the original proportions were more comfortable spaces. Of the above pictures Mutiny and Rufty seem fine because of the length of the room and the ability to experience the height from the opposite end of the room in some sort of perspective. I actually find the Shades Creek kitchen proportions unpleasant. It makes a good picture but I don't think I would like working in that kitchen. I am curious as to how many people with 8-9 foot ceilings vacuum or clean them on a regular basis. I am not sure the extra height makes rooms extra dirty? That said I had to clean my 14 foot LR with elaborate plaster cornices with an extention pole with brushes on it...I purposely did not have any lighting in that ceiling. I think the people who bought the apartment from my buyer put in recessed cans. (Not right in a 1830s house and very hard to change. Comments (3)Better lighting schemes consist of layered lighting from multiple sources and points. So yes, you should consider both recessed and pendants. Pendants with transparent shades will distribute light 360 degrees. Recessed lighting is distributed in a cone shape and make highlights and reveal shadow areas when used alone. Expect to pay more for this room than you have experienced for your library. Comments (23)Most people aren't aware of the problems recessed lights introduce to the building as a system, mainly in upper levels or cathedral ceilings. Even AirTight, Insulation Contact rated cans leak air, it's a question of how much multiplied by how many. I agree with senior editor Martin Holladay from this blog about retrofitting recessed lighting that massive penetrations in the ceiling air barrier should be illegal. If you do have a bunch of penetrations, at least prove the home meets the minimum level of airtightness called for in international codes with a blower door test. To quote Mr. Holladay from his How to Build an Insulated Cathedral Ceiling: "Recessed can lights should never been installed in insulated rafter bays. Period, full stop, end of story. Recessed can lights take up room which should be filled with insulation; they give off heat, creating thermal hot spots in your insulated roof; and they leak air. They should be removed from your ceiling and deposited in front of a moving steam roller."...See More- PRO

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoCheck out cable lighting it allows you to have good lighting at the proper height .If you notice in the picture the lighting is attached to the walls so can be at a 9’ height to work as over all lighting.I use Tech for my clients.

4 years agoWhat do you think of something like this with clear glass globes? It wouldn't restrict the light at all. It has a 4 way switch so you can adjust the lighting.

4 years agoAfter more looking around, I am liking the idea of putting two chandeliers, one on each side of the ceiling fan. I had electrician come today, and now waiting to get his estimate. In the meanwhile, like to get opinion and hear from those who have done anything like this. See the picture of my current ceiling fan (which I am going to replace). The ceiling height is 13 feet 10 inches. The room size is 21 x 15 feet (the length of ceiling beam is 15 feet).
If I decide to go with this option, I will choose a ceiling fan without lights, and hang it with 5 feet downrod. The two chandeliers will be hung lower than the fan, at a midpoint distance on each side of the fan. Will this look cluttered? (Three things hanging from 15 feet ceiling beam). What size chandeliers will look right?
If I decide not to choose this option, I am going to look for a ceiling fan with brighter lights, and add floor lamps for additional lights.
