Grandmother's Hat again...

Love this rose - has anyone figured out who she might be? Mine bloom and bloom from about April through Oct., almost without stopping. Own root, and it has put up one sucker, which is making a new plant. Sometimes it gets "damask crud" in a wet Spring, but I just cut it way back then, and it springs up again w/o any disease. The second mature bush is from a cutting I just stuck bare in the dirt, and threw some water on it occasionally. I have never been able to get this to work with any other rose.

If I had to pick a "favorite" rose -- it would be this . . .
We grow 12-14 plants of it, and many of those were suckers from the first one, which easily grew into big new plants.

In our very mild climate, there are always a few blooms somewhere to enjoy -- and it's changeable enough in form and shade to provide a wonderful visual diversity.

When the weather is particularly warm and damp, it -- yes -- gets some "crud" which is mainly blackspot. But it doesn't spread, and is usually reserved to the lowest canes.

For the first several years that we grew it, we pruned "Grandmother's Hat" rather as we might a Grandiflora. But, eventually, we let her have her way, and grow to her preferred size. If you are so minded, you can grow this rose as a lovely informal hedge, or espalier her as a low climber.

No -- I have read no new thoughts on what she might have been -- but I do know that she has been found in locations in both Northern and Southern California. We found her growing in an old garden, behind a victorian house on Mare Island, and Fred Boutin found her in Altadena, CA and also in Columbia, CA.

She's been sold as "Grandmother's Hat," as 'Mrs. R.G. Sharman-Crawford', and as 'Cornet'.

I've come to the conclusion that, personally, I don't care what she was, and
"Grandmother's Hat" is a good enough name for me.

A delightful rose and a delightful, and appropriate name!

I do still remember, vaguely, from my English childhood in the 1950s, many older ladies wearing hats of just such intricately florid form (though, I think not often of such cheery colour) in church on Sunday mornings.

When you do prune, stick some the cuttings into the ground beneath the plant. Some of them will strike. This is one of the easiest roses I ever tried to root. Soon you will have extras to share with friends. Rosefolly

This is what Bierkreek, located in the Netherlands, said in their email message: "We don’t know very much about it. We only grow it! J That does mean that we see it on our production field, and a year later in 5.5 liter container. Our impressions are quite good. On the field, growing out of the budding place, it will get about 80 centimetres in the year after the budding. On container, just about the same. Quite healthy, a little bit black spot. Vigorous."

Beautiful, Jeri! Those sure look like the blooms I have on my “Not Louise Odier-maybe Grandmother’s Hat” I always look forward to seeing photos of Grandmother’s Hat, so I can compare them to my rose. My rose does so well, that it almost HAS to be Grandmother’s Hat. Like your true Grandmother’s Hat, it’s fine despite the awful heatwave we just had. I didn’t prune mine at all this year. I left most of the OGR’s alone, and was extremely grateful that I could do so without a problem. Mine has occasionally lost the entire first flush to balling. One pleasant side affect to the sudden dry heat (90’s), was that all the buds opened just fine. It’s that cool nighttime fog that can cause them to ball. This time the heatwave hit at the perfect time for my “Not LO-maybe GH. They all opened perfectly. Thanks for all your wonderful pictures, Jeri. I may not always comment, but I do ALWAYS enjoy them. Comtesse -- The first "find" of this rose was by Fred Boutin, in Altadena/Pasadena. Figuring that something this good would be ID'd quickly, he just called it "Altadena Dr. Pink HP".

The second recorded "find" though was by Barbara Worl, in the Bay Area.

SHE said that it reminded her of the silk flowers on her late grandmother's hats. Hence: "Grandmother's Hat".

So, you are right on target.
