How many new plants have you aquired this year? Do you do this?
Comments (17)Mike, First I want to say, the plants I received, beginning Jan 1, 2010, were in 3-4" containers, bulbs and cuttings. Only a handful were larger, meaning 8" to 1' tall. Total: 58. :) :( Marguest, your Banana Tree is beautiful. The colors amazing. There's even a pup. Did you find it on Ebay? Mike, to answer a few questions. I MUST stay away from Ebay..It's one addicting site. Not only do they have great deals on plants, but plant supplies. There's also a few online nurseries I browse every other wk or so. The internet makes it too easy to shop for such an exciting hobby. A few clicked keys, next thing, a package is at your front door? One word of Warning for those who really want to stop buying plants.. Well, an attempt. Do NOT sign up for nursery News Letters. It's convenient, swaying us to their site, displaying their wares. Hear the clicking keys to Paypal? lol. As for local nurseries, fortunately, there are two that sell very very nice and rare specimens..luckily, opposite directions, both a long distance drive. An hour on non-congested days, 1.5-2 hours during 9-5, Rush Hour traffic. Although, traffic has gotten so heavy the past five years, the only time to go anywhere with time to spare is between midnight and 5am. Problem is, the stores are closed. lol. Our grocery store, Jewel's, always has plants for sale. Mostly, basic plants like Spaths, certain Dracaenas, etc. My problem arises when they have dollar sales. 3-4" potted plants for 1.00. Every so often, they'll have a rarer specimen. Buy 3, pot them up, and you have a lovely plant for 3.00. Four years ago, they had, mixed in with other dollar plants, Schefflera 'brassaia/actinophylla, a plant I hadn't seen in years...last one) I grabbed it up fast. lol. That's about it. Not too bad for 9 months. lol. Toni...See MoreCharles de Mills, I love you. Do you have any friends?
Comments (23)Not that anyone is still following this, but this was me (which.chick) and I still have Charles de Mills and he still blooms amazingly every year and I still love him. Mme. Plantier died some years back in a hard winter. I shovel-pruned Stanwell Perpetual because he just looked sad, year after year, and it was depressing. *sigh* Fantin Latour powdery mildews (it's very humid at my house) and does not bloom every year for me. Just... not doing well. I have a friend who's about 200 feet lower than me in elevation with better sun and I'm relocating Fantin there. I've waited long enough for him to settle in and it just isn't going to happen. But, Ispahan is trouble free, HUGE, and produces hundreds of flowers, every single year. (Probably would like a trellis of some sort, but doesn't have one. I have a 3' fence around the base and he sort of fountains out of that. I hack off about 6' a year before winter to keep the canes tidy.) Never sick. Never dies from freezing. Has good clean foliage ALL SUMMER. Just... big and strong grower. Two thumbs up for that. I couldn't source either of the Belles back then, but if I move Fantin Latour, I will try again this spring....See More2012 is the Year of the Dragon....Do You Have Any Dragons ?
Comments (8)I absolutely lust after the green and gold dragon plates on the Shanghai Tang website. I wish they came in the 8" size, as I have no need for MORE dinner plates. I cannot get the picture to post here, so take a look at the link. The salad/dessert plate size would look just right with my Limoges dinner plates :) Here is a link that might be useful: Shanghai Tang Bone China Dragon Plates...See MoreDo you have an edible landscape? with year around interest?
Comments (8)Strawberries and sage in a pattern. Thyme around it as well. Lots of other plants in the background. Potager garden. Around the fountain is onion, blueberries, raspberries, herbs and a few flowers (monarda and agastache). In the potager beds there’s currently basil, cucumbers, peppers and miniature roses. I swap out the potager beds each season with different annuals, but the ones around the fountain stay consistent. Next in the potager there will be lettuce, broccoli and radishes (along with the miniature roses.... they stay each season). I espaliered my pomegranate tree and also a Cara Cara orange tree between climbing roses. I have various other citrus and fruit trees with roses, thyme and creeping rosemary near them. I believe it helps with pollination as well as looks beautiful, if you have the room. Google “potager garden” pics and you will find a bunch of beautiful French designs for combining flowers, veggies, fruits and herbs....See Morewantonamara Z8 CenTex
