Is your washer top loader or front loader? What do you want to achieve by putting counter top above washer and dryer? I have a front loader. Have cabinets above the washer and dryer. I find it very hard to get into the cupboards without getting a stool to reach the supplies I need. I fold my clothes as they come out of the dryer and either hang them on pegs on the back wall or fold them on top of the washer/dryer and put them back in the clothes basket for carrying to the bedrooms. As far as preventing things from falling behind the machines, with a counter top I think it would be hard to see fallen items. I can see behind my washer/dryer and between them and have had no problem with things falling that I cannot reach. If you want your counter top for another work space, than I think it would be something you might want to do.

They are Samsung front loaders. The counter top will be flush against the side and the back to prevent things falling.

A prefab laminate counter cut to fit and set on top of 2x2 or 2x4s screwed to the walls. A cutout in the counter for the hoses with a box made of scrap wood to cover the hole. I did this in my closet laundry, also to prevent lost socks, etc. In a previous laundry I put a narrow drawer bank in the center, but otherwise the same. That one was really solid, though a plumber did partly stand on the current one with no problems.

There was an article or post not too long ago where they made a counter and just set it on the machines. Might have been a repurposed table top? I can’t recall the details.

You can buy a premade 30x60 laminate desktop from Ikea for 30 bucks. Attach it to your appliance tops with 3M command strips.

Level the washer and dryer, then screw perimeter blocking around the walls. Scribe a plastic laminate covered top to the walls, and resting on the washer and dryer. Maybe four finish screws into the blocking to prevent vibration noise, but you want this top removable.

If you have a ReStore close by, stop in and see what you can find. Old island countertops are usually pretty cheap and will be deep enough for the space. You also might be able to find an old dining table or desk to cut down. At my local store, I would usually find something suitable for that use for no more than $20, maybe $25

If you use a prefab laminate countertop, put in a center support or it will sag.

That is exactly what I would like to accomplish, and I love it, dmpsd! I went to the IKEA website, but they only had black, I believe. Also, Are your washer and dryer on the pedestals? Are your hoses behind? Ours are a few inches above and visible. (I forgot to take a pic yesterday evening, but ours is similar with the cabinets above.

What is the length and width of the Linnmon table top? 30 x 60?

How do you propose to do this and still be able to access the shutoffs, dryer hose, and pull them out to clean. That’s sonething that most people don’t think about. If they are front loafers, the top of them is already designed as a work surface. You do t need any additional counters raising it up higher.

@ greendesigns. My countertop is extremely light and I can simply pull it forward to access the hoses or to pull the washer/dryer out. The basket that sits in the middle of the countertop actually blocks the water valves. Because the table that I used for the legs is skinnier than the table that I used for the top (24 v. 30), there is room for the dryer vent to run behind the machines and to the vent without hitting the "legs". One of my kids always unloads his backpack and switches out his notebooks in the laundry room and before he used to always drop stuff in the crevices between and behind the machines, but no more!!

Basically, the laundry room counter consists of an IKEA linnmon table top (I used white, but it comes in other colors - it is normally $39, but goes on sale for $29), two shorter IKEA linnmon table tops for the legs (I think these were $19/each), 4 L brackets to attach the "legs" to the top and 4 furniture glides put into the bottom of the legs as feet. The furniture glides gave me a bit more space between the tops of the washer/dryer and the counter top (some people suggested the machines needed room to breath). They also gave me some space between the floor and the legs so in case there is a water leak, the legs won't get instantly wet.

My washer/dryer are not on pedestals. I am only 5'2", so if they were, I would not be able to use the countertop!

You can see here that the table I used for the legs is not as wide as the table top. This is great because it allows the dryer vent to pass by the legs to connect with the vent, but I did not like the look of the gap, so I placed the basket with dog leashes there to cover the hole and prevent things from falling through the crevice.

Thank you so much for the information! Our washer and dryer are white, so that is the color I would go with too. I will let you know what I create. :) Ours aren't on pedestals either.
