Help Question about moving Giant Bird of Paradise?
Comments (7)Be aware, Travellers Palms are NOT giant bird of paradise (Strelizia Nicholae). Two different things. Do NOT do the advice below if it is a travellers palm. If it is, you'll likely kill it. If it IS a giant bird, your best bet is to actually cut it back to the ground. The rhizome/root can be divided like a banana plant. I've tried to move bananas and BoP before (they're both similar herbaceous plants) and by far the most successful where where I cut back most of it, perhaps leaving only some very small new plants coming out of the root. Just do a google search for "Propogating Bird of Paradise" and you'll see how to divide the roots after they get cut back. With a root ball that large, I wouldn't be surprised if it's back bigger than the house within a year or so, even from a full ground level cut back if it gets enough water, sun and fertilizer. aiki...See MoreQuestion about fresh beans
Comments (4)Mustangs, no, I didn't mean green beans. I meant as in peas and beans such as black-eye peas, red beans, black beans, purple hull beans, etc.. Thanks for replying though. Thanks to other posters also. I went ahead and purchased the frozen purple hull beans. My body wants some bean soups. I'm glad to know I wouldn't need to soak them. In a month or two, I'd be able to purchase some fresh beans at the local farmer markets....See MoreA few questions about my granite
Comments (5)I *think* it may have been a tan color, but can't recall 100%. When they came out to look at this in November, they did provide me with the mixtures to make a poultice but from our conversation, she didn't think it would work on this but rather for the darkened areas near the range (cooking splatters) The holidays have kept us too busy so before I did anything, I thought I'd start here with some of my questions. Thanks for your reply and bringing that up Trebuchet....See MoreQuestion about Cooking with Alcohol
Comments (13)My chili wouldn't be the same without the beer in it. Beer tenderizes ribs nicely when braised in it. Beer bread is wonderful stuff. Beer battered onion rings and fish wouldn't be the same. And other things too. It's true that not all the alcohol evaporates out as is the theory, but in reality it doesn't matter. Look what's in cold remedies (remember the saying, flood a cold and drown a fever) and other things. If someone is an alcoholic it doesn't mean they can't eat something with alcohol in it. It means they're a soak and don't stop drinking when they start. They're not going to go on a bender after eating a bowl of chili, especially when they don't know what's in it. (There, that's bound to get someone's knickers in a knot.) If someone has a TRUE allergy to alcohol, though I've never heard of an actual case, that could be different. The point made about extracts is totally valid. Can't eat braised ribs but can eat something with vanilla extract, rum balls, etc. Shows you just how much is in the mind....See MoreSooz
