Happy Birthday Lars!
Comments (38)Death Valley is a very good vacation place, and so far we've seen lots of French, German, and Japanese tourists, as well as a few Canadians. Saturday we went to Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon (drive through), and Dante's view - all before lunch. Then we met my friends from Utah, who had to wait to get into their room, and after lunch we went to Rhyolyte and Beatty NV with Mark and Greg. Yesterday we got an early start to go to Ubehebe Crater and decided to stop by Scotty's Castle on the way. We could not get a tour for the inside for an hour an a half, and so we only did the outside self-guided tour, which I felt was enough. Then we went on to the craters, which Kevin and I had explored before, but Mark and Greg made quick work of hiking down and back up the 500 feet of elevation change in the crater. Kevin and I went toward the smaller craters. Next we went to the racetrack on a very bad gravel road that took three times as long as it should have, but we got some great photos there of the "floating" rocks. After that, we decided to make a loop across Hunter Mountain to have dinner in Panamint Springs, instead of turning around and going back the way we came. The six mile road from Teakettle Junction (where we had lunch) was a dead end, but we decided to take the other road, which Kevin and I had taken 12 years ago and almost got stranded in mud from melting snow at the top of the mountain - and we got lost along the way at a "Y" in the road that went to a dead-end at a cliff where there was a dilapidated building and a rusted out 1920s car. To be continued - computer and internet service acting up! Lars ETA: The road we chose to cross Hunter Mountain was closed due to damage from rock slides, floods, and landslides, which removed or covered parts of the road. There was no warning of this from the Teakettle Junction end of this road. Thanks for the warning to stay safe, but it came perhaps a bit too late! Just burger's (with or without cheese), fries and onion rings.9and of course a full bar) When you cash out, you go to the bar and tell them what you had. Careful, there's often a line for week-day lunch. I also strongly recommend one of the Arabic restaurants. (In Dearborn this mostly means Lebanese) El Ameer is considered one of the best. I also like Cedarland. Cedarland has a drive through, so it used to get my business for Schwarma and Falafel on the way home from work or my voice lessons. East Dearborn has the largest North American arabic population outside of the middle east. Head to Warren and Schaefer. There are lots of good bakeries and coffee shops, too! La Shish is well known - a local chain. The original is La Shish / Talal on Michigan Avenue. Still.. make the trip, go to El Ameer. Greek Town or Mexican Village in Detroit also have good examples of the food of the ethnic neighborhoods. If they are interested in either, let me know. Also, there are some good Polish restaurants in Hamtramck, but I know less about those. If they are looking for Michelin star eating the Lark is supposed to be wonderful. It's on my list, but I've never been. I agree about the Whitney, by the way. At the other end of the scale, they should definitely go to a Coney Island. Lafayette and American are the original, but Senate, Kerby's, any would be good. Coney Dogs are a must-get for my husband when we are in town. I get greek salad and coney fries. We're headed back to Detroit during Memorial Day week... and we're definitely hitting a coney island. Another must-go for us is The Earle in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor has lots of culinary choices. if it's on their route let me know!...See MoreLars....Hummus question
Comments (16)Here is the recipe I used. It is from a book called "Bread" by Eric Treuille and Ursula Ferrigno. My changes are in italics. Naan 2 tsp dried yeast 1 c milk 4 c AP flour 1-1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 3 T plain yogurt 2T ghee or unsalted butter -- I used butter Sprinkle the yeast into 1/2 c of the milk in a bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes: stir to dissolve. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl, make a well in the center and add the dissolved yeast, sugar, yogurt and butter. Mix, stirring in the remaining milk as needed to form a soft, sticky dough. -- as written my dough was quite stiff, I added about 1/4 c more milk than called for Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Put the dough in a clean bowl and cover with a clean dish towel. Let rise until double in size, 3-4 hours. Punch down and let rest 10 minutes. -- I oiled the bowl and turned the dough to coat. Highly recommend doing so Divide the dough into four equal pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece to form a round 6 inches across and 1/4 inch thick. Pull one side to form a tear shape, stretch the dough until it is about 10 inches in length. Preheat the broiler on it's highest setting. Preheat a baking sheet under the broiler for about 2 minutes. Place two pieces of the dough on the hot baking sheet. Broil for about 2-3 minutes per side, until puffy and golden. --watch carefully, once it starts browning it goes very fast! Repeat with the remaining two pieces of dough.
