Painting porch floor - primer?

Looking to (re)paint the floor of a screened porch. It's hardwood that has been painted over several times already, with much of the paint around the edges (where it gets hit with the weather) flaking off or already gone. Some of the floor needs repairing (which I am doing first). I had planned to prime, then paint (2 coats), then polyurethane (1-2 coats). The guy at the paint store told me I should not do the primer because (1) the floor has already been painted, and (2) you want as few layers as possible on the floor. (I didn't even mention the polyurethane to him.) Anyone with experience in this want to weigh in? Is he right? Or will primer extend the life of the job? Also, if anyone wants to recommend their favorite porch floor paint, I'd love to hear from you. I am currently considering INSL-X Tough Shield or Armorseal Tread-Plex. Thanks.
