Please help with my design dilemma!
I need some major help. Our living room needs more seating, but color coordination is going to be tough. What we currently have is our “kelp” couch and my beloved DWR recliner. I need to add 2 more seats - I can either go with two chairs or a loveseat.
The challenge is coordinating colors/styles feels impossible with our current setup.
Why not replace the couch, you ask? We have two kids 6 and under. This thing has survived their beatings so far! And, budget.. I can’t fathom spending 5k+ on a couch + more seating right now. We are sticklers for quality and comfort so I don’t see us getting a lower-priced couch. I am willing to replace the recliner so that I can coordinate with the other two seating options.
So, my questions are: what color(s) should I consider? What fabrics? Leather would probably be easier to withstand with the kids.. would that work? Should I replace the recliner? Or just add two leather chairs? So conflicted. Help please :)

Comments (13)I'm the wrong person to ask about restrictive. I paid thousands of dollars for fancy staged Blum hinges that would do soft close and still open to 170 degrees. I HATE 90 openings. There were similar options for old models of SubZero to be flush, with similar problems. I was thrilled when Miele showed up with a fridge I liked with a staged hinge. That said, I often don't even open the door the full 90 degrees. I'd have to move the kitchen stool to take advantage of the full width, and for small things I don't need to. (It doesn't block the door, just has me standing closer to the oven.) When I use my "goose pot", which is a 15 qt. Le Creuset cast iron roaster, with a 22 lb. turkey, stuffing and a bottle of wine in it, it takes two people to get it out. Unlike when it's cold, when it's hot you can't bend your elbows close to your body. In fact, we put a mini wood gateleg table in front of the oven, and lift the pot onto that, so we can get the turkey out and onto the cutting board. Having the door open fully is the only way that works. I don't know how one would even approach it with a drop down door. But if you want flush and don't mind the door at 90 degrees--which the oven is designed to be able to do--the cabinets have to be made deep enough, and braces have to be made near the opening for the oven to attach to. Okay, I was looking for information for you and figured out why Dietician said they can't be mounted flush. The 400 series have opted for the push button opening with an integrated pull groove on the edge of the door. You need that in case there's a failure. I've read it before but forget. Either the child lockout, or a power failure or something requires you to use the pull groove. They sell optional handles, so if you want flush, which covers up the groove unless you leave a channel, you'd have to have the handle. That's the trade off then. Something has to stick out, whether its the whole door or the handle. Handleless is probably the more modern look. Neither would look bad in your kitchen. Unasked for advice: You're having enough issues with your KD, you'd be best off dealing with what she knows how to do, or finding a KD who knows better what you want. Some in her position would be excited to have a client who wants to expand their knowledge, and go on the journey with you. Here is another possible option for microwave cabinet on right of window side. above walls: 30 wide (42" high) below bases: 15 drawer then 2 ( 30 w bases) If this is the only cabinets in the kitchen, I highly suggest going to 42" tall with no crown to get an extra storage : 1 extra shelf per cabinet. Also under lighting really is functional as well. Here is a photo example how 42" white shaker look with no crown. I agree with yvonnecmartin (cookie sheet somewhere is useful) Don't forget fillers on adjacent side walls, they're functional,too. Hope that helps :)...See Moretile meeting wood floors
Comments (8)I too have been warned not to put real wood by wood tile. There are so many tile options that you are sure to find something else good! First, you might consider something that has a dark brown speck or line in it so that the dark hardwood doesn’t look stark next to the tile. I would also look for a long rectangular tile, not small squares, to balance the shapes. Comments (10)It seems placement could work centered or offset, but without the sconces only. According to your sketch, the sconce is too close to the hall. If the artwork is offset from the table, you have the balance and massing from the sideboard, so picture yourself sitting in the family room. First, you probably won't view the art perfectly associated to the center of the table. Then, if you see the artwork not centered on table/chandelier, that may be ok because the visual breakup with the sideboard may balance the entire view. And you've drawn like a long 6'+ piece, so it may conflict with that 4-gang switch box there anyway. But, I would probably just eliminate the sconces as IMO it detracts from the art anyway, and limits you in flexiblity for a different sized piece in the future. Then you can play with a centered or offset location upon hanging. I think either could work. Same logic I would apply to the sideboard, whether it can be centered or offset from the table....See More

4 years agoOk, here are more pics.. please excuse the kid items.. we will remove those ;) Hopefully this makes sense as to the room orientation. It is essentially a rectangle with two openings on one side of it (which go to the dining room and entryway) and the other side has the large windows and a corner fireplace beside it.
The reason the couch is against the window is because we can’t put it on the other side. If we put it against the back wall, the chaise would block the entryway opening. Putting it in the center of the room facing the TV will close off the room and make the space behind it feel awkward.
My thinking is to place a loveseat or two chairs along the back wall (where we have one random chair and an easel now!). If we need to, we’d replace the DWR chair, but keep it in the same place.

4 years agoI would do two chairs then, people dont enjoy sitting on a love seat to converse feels tight, two chairs that swivel would be better then they can pivot to the direction they are talking in. With a nice little table between for drinks How much space is between the end of the sofa and the wall, and how wide?
