Would you buy and paint this cabinet if you needed a bookcase?
Comments (33)I do get the perspective, and having worked with Native Americans who hate having their culture caricatured, to belonging to a minority group myself that is often misrepresented, to me just not liking caricature in general, I can appreciate the sentiment. But the pictures on the doors might not even have people in them, or they could be covered with fabric if you like all the other decorative elements. I'm not a fan of Chinoiserie, but having said that, I have a house full of its cousin, "Japonaise" which is a little kitschy at times but the stuff I have, while a bit trite and cutesy is old and charming in some sense too. Only offensive if you were unsophisticated enough to think that Japanese people dressed like that now, etc. This is stylized art from a certain era which it evokes. My Japanese friend thought mom's things were charming antiques because that is not a style of art popular and ubiquitous in Japan anymore. There's corny stuff overdone for every culture, so you have to decide for yourself whether it is just cute or obnoxious. I have dorky ceramic figurines of a little Dutch boy and girl and they aren't very flattering to the Dutch as a whole, but they were in grandma's house when I was a kid and I indulge them still. But I sure wouldn't buy a lawn jockey and try and dress him up as St. Francis if what I really wanted in my front yard was a statue of St. Francis. Which would be my point about the cabinet. If you like the decorations and think it will look good at your house, buy it and work with it. If you want something plain, look for and buy something of quality that is plain. Drink the good wine!...See MoreWhere would you put this chandelier?
Comments (18)Lori, I support your creative vision wholeheartedly. The chairs will support your light purchase. I look forward to seeing your plans for the rest of the room. When you first mentioned that you have a "transitional" home, my response leaned negative as that chandelier is not a transitional piece. It is unusual. Your game room may not be cookie-cutter "transitional", but it will be unique and fun, as a game room should be. You've found your accent pieces. Now wall art, sofa, tables, plants? You said you have a ceiling fan in the room. So, perhaps you can find a way to convert the chandelier into a floor lamp? (Hang it on a pole of some sort?) I look forward to seeing your photos. This one is a stretch.... IV pole?...See MoreWhere would you put a chandelier/pendant lights in this kitchen?
Comments (5)We won't have the tile border anymore. Everything is being ripped out and redone. If I have to choose between centering chandelier above dining area or lining it up with pendants, which would you pick? One complication is that our dining table has leaves, so the size (and thus the center) changes regularly depending on my mood, number of guests, etc....See MoreDo you think this chandelier would look good for my DR?
Comments (7)I like your last two. It’s really just personal preference — I don’t like the one in your OP because it looks like they started building the light, then at the last minute couldn’t find the style of shades/bulbs called for and tacked some on they got from a different chandelier. These last two fit your room well, I think. Out of them, I like the last one best. But again, it can only be your choice! We don’t live there. :)...See MoreCorinne Masterson
