Schlumbergera Truncata (Easter cactus) Wilted and Suffering
Comments (17)Just wanted to close this off. I repotted the thanksgiving cactus stalks in a mix of equal parts African Violet mix, Fine Orchid Bark and Perilite. For several weeks the plants held their own, not improving nor declining. I decided to razor off the last 2-4 segments of each stalk, back to where the segments looked healthiest. About 2 weeks later new growth started from each of the stalks. Growth was reddish/purplish however, so I lightly sprayed soil & foliage once each morning with a solution of RO water and pure epsom salts to supply additional magnesium (15mL ES to 1.2 liters RO water; credit to http://homeguides.sfgate.com/problems-leaves-turning-red-christmas-cactus-89822.html). I did that for about 10 days. The plants are looking much healthier now, are growing normally and appear to be fully recovered from what I believe was a problem caused by a combination of temporary overwatering, and suboptimal potting media, which in turn led to root rot. Thanks for the insights to all who replied!...See MorePlease Help! Possible bug problem on Schlumbergera Truncata (I think)
Comments (5)Thank you both! Hopefully someone will drop by & know for sure about the bugs/best way to treat. If not I'm going to do an experiment tomorrow>>>soil drench w/the bayer 3 in 1 & clean the leaves w/rubbing alcohol & q-tips! If it survives great if not mom already gave the ok to toss it. I do have it isolated but I definitely don't want an outbreat/infestation in the house. Have dealt that before with aphids & DON'T want to live that nightmare again w/any bug! If I have to resort to experimenting, can it be repotted into the new mix after the bug issue is taken care of, wait until it's finished blooming or spring time? Thanks :)...See MoreIs this a TRUE Christmas Cactus (schlumbergera x buckleyi)
Comments (60)ALEXBYRNE44.... IF you see this, that is the 'Christmas cactus I am searching for SO badly. Can you tell me where you got it? I know its a year ago, Maybe it is a store that is in Ft.laud, where I am,and i can look to see if they still sell it, this year. OR do you or someone else have any cuttings of it Schlumbergera X Buckleyi that is the one. I have a post on the Cactus forum looking for cuttings of this cactus, Mine was well over 150yo, and it died it went through so many generations, and Fla. heat must have been to much for it, after being in Conn. all its life. It died slowly over decades, then I got cuttings/segments of it from some other lucky owners of it, 4-5 years ago, but they have died on me this past summer, after Hurricane Irma came through. It finally gave up 2 weeks ago:( Just in time for X-Mas. The extra hot summer we had must have been to much for it, then the hurricane took the rest of its 'strength I guess. If you or someone sees this, maybe you can help me out???...See MoreWhat's left of my variegated true 'Christmas Cactus' after many falls
Comments (30)Hello Mike, just been looking at the plant at the top and noticed the pot it’s in, maybe when repotting time approaches it would be best suited to a wider, shallow style of container, half pots we call them here? That will give it more stability as the base of that white one is so very narrow and it’s a tall pot isn’t it, all very unstable. Would hate it to get smashed about again. I had a case of a falling down TC also....one that I rescued from mums house when she moved into the Home, placed it in a hanging basket, just sat the pot inside it, chain snapped and whole lot crashed to the floor. The plant was smashed to bits, one half completely gone off a full circle plant of about 2ft diameter. I was so sad.....but each and every severed piece rooted again, I now have two plants......and new chains! The mother plant is in the process of regenerating all it’s lost limbs from low down on the smashed main trunk, it will soon have filled in the lost half of the circle. Buds forming on both plants as I write, so all was not lost of my Special plant :-) Gill...See More
