should I remove part of a river birch???

I have a beautiful river birch, planted probably as a sapling in 1990, that (I think) need to be trimmed. One of the two trucks is overarching our bump-out and shading a decorative plum tree. I also allowed some suckers to get out of hand and they are gigantic now on this fork. Too high for me to trim using an extension ladder. I would like to take off most of the left fork of the right trunk that is causing the shading. I fear it would hit the house were it to come down in an ice storm and the plum tree is starting to thin (I think) from the shade.

Am I missing anything? Would removing the half I am thinking of cause the remaining truck to twist and degrade? Are river birches robust trees and I am just being paranoid?

I'm going to try to post two pictures (I'm new): one from a distance showing the right side that I wish to remove. The other from below - what I wish to remove is connected to the right trunk, the left fork. The fork to come out is big - maybe 12" diameter
