Fridge only / Freezer only combo - What brands are best?
Comments (3)Do a search at the bottom, (NOT the top), of the main appliance page, (hit the back button on your browser) to get to the main appliance page, then search for Thermador Columns. You will see them compared to SZ, Mieles, as well as KA's. Everything you wanted to know about separate fridge/freezer combos. As a general rule, folks seem quite pleased with the Thermador columns. We have a 48" built in and paneled Jenn-air (had it for 8 years now), and love it, completely trouble free, cept for an ice maker that died after 5 years, but cheap and easy to replace. Alto the Jenn-air has plenty of space for the wife and I, (both the fridge and freezer sections), had I seen the columns back in 2006 when we bought the JA, I might have been "tempted", alto I'm not sure I would like the idea and the expense of running two separate cooling systems. We pride ourselves on our low electric bill, usually around $60 for a 2700 sq ft house, and I don't think we could do that running 2 separate appliances. To save you some work "searching", just click the "helpful Link" at the end of my post~~~~~it will take you to the Thermador/Miele~~threads I first mentioned, in this post. Good luck with your upcoming decisions!! Gary Here is a link that might be useful: Fridge/freezer separates...See More36 or 42" SxS Fridge/freezer with ice dispenser
Comments (3)The 42" SxS JA,Thermador, and KA are all made by Whirlpool and are essentially the same. The JA used to have exclusive use of the variable speed compressor but I believe that is no longer the case. The Bosch freestanding fridges are generally considered to have poor icemaking capacity. The freestanding Bosch is not made by nor engineered by Bosch. It is made by Daewoo in Mexico. The freestanding KA is considered to have a very large capacity to make ice even if the quality of ice and storage area for the ice is not great. The Bosch built-ins and the Thermador built-ins other than SxS are engineered in Germany by Bosch but built in Turkey in a Bosch owned plant. The SubZero's(made in Wisconsin) dispenser is genrally considered to be very problematic. It is very picky about the water pressure and water quality that is fed to the icemaker. IMO nothing beats SubZero and Liebherr for storing veggies longterm but Liebherr does not offer an ice dispenser. If you require large amounts of ice might a seperate built-in ice-maker be an option? Then you could pick the fridge independent of the ice-making/dispensing consideration and have more room to store veggies and meat....See MoreHow inconvenient to have fridge and freezer columns far apart?
Comments (11)I have 27" SZ columns that are set far apart and have never thought that it would have been better together. I suppose the length I have to walk from freezer to fridge to defrost isn't that big a deal since it is infrequent. I'm not a big ice in drink person, but my husband is and he's never complained. We do have our freezer near our butler's pantry so that cocktails can be easily prepared :) and you asked about size, so thought I'd share. We are a family of five, eat mostly fresh/cooked from scratch kind of family that enjoys the trips to Costco for certain items! I love the size of our fridge and freezer. The drawers are amazing and I can't fathom all the stuff I used to have to throw out with our old standard depth fridge!!!...See MoreIce on Floor of Top Freezer in Fridge - Whirlpool Model #WRT311FZDW
Comments (12)Hello again: 1. Many thanks for all of the inputs. 2. "2nd Defrost Today" means -- this is the 2nd time, since purchase, that I have turned fridge off for period of > 24 hours. 3. My discussion was based on the following article @ https://homeguides.sfgate.com How to Repair a Leaking Whirlpool Refrigerator That Has a Freezer on Top ... Defrost Drains Inside your refrigerator and freezer compartments, typically near the back wall, is a small indentation. This is the defrost drain, which takes water and ice that accumulates on the walls of the refrigerator and freezer and drains it down to the drain pan on the bottom of the unit. These drains can become clogged with food debris or ice. Wipe the drain with a solution of warm water and mild soap and pour a small amount of warm water and vinegar down the drain. Check to ensure that the system is flowing freely and the water quickly drains. It appears that some disassembly will be required to locate the drainage hole that is clogged. 4. Yes, those are clearly air vents. I'll, therefore, be looking further for the drainage hole(s) and, as stated, some disassembly may be required. User manual is my next order of business and I'm disappointed to say that this wasn't done much prior to my post. -Guess I got way ahead of myself....See MoreGabe
