Fridge only / Freezer only combo - What brands are best?

We are still considering a 48" built-in, but I think we should look at the fridge only / freezer only combo (though I think it would be a bit bigger), simply because of price. Any recommendations?

Do a search at the bottom, (NOT the top), of the main appliance page, (hit the back button on your browser) to get to the main appliance page, then search for
Thermador Columns.

You will see them compared to SZ, Mieles, as well as KA's.
Everything you wanted to know about separate fridge/freezer combos.

As a general rule, folks seem quite pleased with the Thermador columns.

We have a 48" built in and paneled Jenn-air (had it for 8 years now), and love it, completely trouble free, cept for an ice maker that died after 5 years, but cheap and easy to replace.

Alto the Jenn-air has plenty of space for the wife and I, (both the fridge and freezer sections), had I seen the columns back in 2006 when we bought the JA, I might have been "tempted", alto I'm not sure I would like the idea and the expense of running two separate cooling systems.

We pride ourselves on our low electric bill, usually around
$60 for a 2700 sq ft house, and I don't think we could do that running 2 separate appliances.

I have the Frigidaire twins and I love how easy it is to find items inside. Plenty of room in the doors.

I wish they had put the ice maker down lower so everyone can reach the ice. We put a second ice bin about half way down with a scoop. We refill it every day.

About two weeks ago an alarm started going off. I finally figured out it was the refrigerator. I opened it and the temperature was 58ÃÂ°. Manual said that happens during power outages, but we haven't had an outage.

Today the alarm went off about a dozen times. It is now 60ÃÂ° inside the refrigerator. My old GE side by side was filled with perishables from my new refrigerator in case it went out.

My GE is 29 years old and still works well. The icemaker even works.

So I will be calling Frigidaire tomorrow. Wish I could help you more.

Per Consumer Reports, for top freezers without icemakers, only 4 brands are rated, I would guess because the others don't make fridges w/o icemakers. Frigidaire & GE have the fewest repairs, as reported by consumers. Then Kenmore & Whirlpool follow. But Frigidaire & GE are 7%, while Kenmore & Whirlpool are at 8% repairs, so there's not much difference among any of them. Personally, I've read so many bad reviews about other models of GE that I wouldn't buy a GE unless it had the perfect dimensions and was cheaper than everything else. If you find one you love but it has an icemaker, you should be able to remove it easily. There's just a few screws there. Maybe a line to snip (but maybe not). There's probably instructions on Youtube. (That's what I plan to do. Like you, I don't care for icemakers.)

We just got a Frigidaire Gallery - the freezer opens like a drawer and there are two pullout baskets, a deep one and a shallower one on top. Love it! It replaced the one that came with the house (I hated it so much, I can't remember if it was a Kenmore or Whirlpool) -- it was a bottom freezer that had a door (rather than a drawer) with a little shelf on top, a pullout basket on the bottom and a rack on the door that was too small to actually hold anything. It was awful! I grew up with a SxS and remember the freezer being quite narrow. It really depends on what you want to keep in it and whether it will be your only freezer. HTH!

It seems difficult to really get a good feel for how we do things. In this temp home I have maybe 5' of actual counter space. That has a small microwave, blender (used a few times a day) and another spot where I usually have my electric skillet. The small bit of counter left is where I chop veggies. LOL Before we moved here I would do more things up ahead and freeze. I still do that with ground beef but nothing else really right now. What I see as our possible uses: 1. Freeze ahead: -gluten free/egg free baked goods for my youngest child -gluten free baked goods for the other four kids -make ahead treats/snacks for myself I do these some already but not in the quanities I would prefer. -browned ground beef -grilled chicken -raw meats I get on sale -casseroles prepped and ready for oven 2. Produce storage -We use a lot of lettuce. Most of the kids like salad and dh and I eat it quite a bit. -bell peppers - these I should really chop in advance but don't do that right now for lack of counter space (and forethought) Honestly though, if I chop them up, I usually just freeze them. -celery, carrots, zuchinni, asparagus and other odds and ends. I tend to make soups with tons of veggies. So one day my fridge might be filled to the brim and the next day 50% empty, but I have dh stop at the store on the way home that night. 3. Containers -I like to make broth and store in jars in the fridge. I might have 6-8 quart jars one day and then none the next. -I keep a few other jars of various items. We don't have a lot of condiments or sodas. Mainly drink water or prepare our drinks fresh. Except almond milk. That I purchase in cartons. So I FEEL like I would utilize quite a bit of fridge space. I would like to buy a half/whole cow. That would use up a lot of freezer space. I tend to his costco and other specialty stores about 1 hour away from here and stock up on things in the freezer. Special bacon, special allergy free deli turkey, special pepperoni are three things I get for sure. I might have 12 packages of the turkey which take up an entire shelf in the upright freezer. But then I use those up over a period of 4-6 months before I get more.

The 36" Sub-Zero is best in the Over/Under and French Door configs. Side by side version has far too small a freezer. The capacity will be pretty close across the board on built-in units like this. On the 36" units with the freezer on the bottom, the Refrigerator section is 16.4 cuft and the freezer is 5.3 cuft. We sell a good deal, customers are usually very happy with them. I have both the Sub-Zero and the Miele 36" units in my store. The Miele is nice as well, but it has noticeably less capacity in the refrigerator side, and less capacity overall as well. Dodge59 - thanks for the advice to search from the bottom of the page. I wasn't getting anywhere searching from the top! I'll try that next time!

I was looking at the Thermador columns and they seem almost as expensive as a single built-in, and as you said, more electricity to run - I wouldn't love that. As it is, we are getting solar panels installed to help with that area :) We are also considering a 48" built-in (Kitchenaid and SubZero are what we've seen so far at a local shop). The guy said the Kitchenaid is built on the same platform as Jenn-Air (if I'm remembering correctly) so I'm glad to hear you like yours! I like that the price is better than the SZ!

Peke - I think I just read your other thread about issues with your Frigidaire. I hope you get it working soon!
