Help. Just stained my floors dark . Should I paint my walls?
Comments (10)Lighter walls and a darker rug, and overall more color please. Right now there is no focal point in this room, and I hope you'll consider a fantastic painting over the fireplace and ditch all the small stuff on the mantel. With such a very dark floor the light rug just looks wrong. In nature you have the brown earth, then green grass and trees and then the lighter blue of the sky. Try a warm colored rug (like an Oriental, which has many colors), a glass coffee table which will show the rug instead of the weighty, chunky ottoman, off-white walls and drapes that are not much darker than the walls to open up this room. Pillows with colors taken from the rug which will tie the color scheme together, and then art on the walls in rich colors to glow against the light walls....See MoreShould I paint the bookshelves to match the built-in cabinets?
Comments (7)Thanks @Lindsay K and @HU-187528210! The hutch has a brand new factory finish so I won't be painting that. The question is whether to leave it as a break from all the white or to blend the shelves on one or both sides in. Right now I'm tempted to leave it as is, wait for the counters/backplash/fireplace surround to go in as well as all our rugs and furniture, and only change out the paint if it looks like a terrible sore thumb....but open to other views....See MoreShould I paint these built ins blue? Comments (20)If you want some color and interest in the dining room, I would think about changing what is over the buffet and getting a marvelous piece of artwork. Either one large piece or a trio, that goes to the height of the door frame. I would also change what is in those cabinets to make for a more interesting display in terms of color, shape and texture. For example, on the left, you have all white objects, it looks like serving pieces or bowls, all lined up in a row. This is a snooze. If you do these two things, you may not feel the desperate need to paint those cabinets....See MoreWhat color should I stain or paint my built in media cabinet?
Comments (6)Did you save any scraps of wood? I have used a lime wax before. It would make it look like your candlesticks. I’m not a pro, so I would consult someone before using it on a built-in. An espresso stain would match other elements and not compete with the fireplace, but might be heavy. I think you have a very nice balance between dark and light now. If you had continued your baseboard beneath it, I would say paint it the trim color. Probably would still be fine. Hopefully someone will give you some advice on other colors. I would definitely try any stain/wax treatments on scrap first so you know what technique will give you the color you want. You might have to use wood conditioner or do a certain number of coats....See Moregroveraxle
