Help with patio. Cement sidewalk, against house, ground on grade
Comments (19)We are planning to eventually build out a deck around the other side of the house, but that won't happen for a while (there is a fire escape in the way. It's an old house, and that's a whole other story...). The lot is only ~50-55' wide at that point (pretty densely packed mostly single-family houses), so I think having too large (especially too wide) of a deck would be weird. The half patio/half deck gives a compromise of more useable space without having the deck as the whole outdoor space and running the width of the yard. Rereading your comment, though, are you suggesting to replace the stoop entirely and build the patio up to the stoop stairs? The two-stage plan would give us house-level decking and ground-level patio....See MoreNeed help - long sidewalk to front of house landscaping ideas
Comments (11)So I assume you want to plant something in the rocks? We need to know your approximate location. It won’t do any good to recommend palms if you live in Minnesota. And what’s the sun exposure of this sidewalk - if your front door faces East, this sidewalk would have full south sun most of the day. And how wide is it, measured from the sidewalk to the wall? It looks very small....See MoreFront entry sidewalk and landscaping help
Comments (6)Hopefully the walk is at least 4' wide. 5' is OK or better, depending on the run and surroundings. The landing should be the full width of the porch opening between posts. and 3' to 6' deep (front to back.) Try to have planting beds be no shallower than 6'. You can use a scored 12" border at the perimeter of a concrete walk to add a decorative quality to it. (It looks better on a 5' wide walk than 4'.)...See MoreSidewalk design.
Comments (9)I don't think this is a particularly attractive implementation, but just shows what you could do with the slope. Another terrace built with the brick/pavers like your garden bed, with the walkway on top. And this probably looked wonderful after it was planted. I'd probably do a combo materials for the walkway, somehow combining the aggregate with concrete...alternating pads or outlining one with the other....See MoreYardvaark
