Window tinting home windows?
Comments (9)My husband and I are very much "do-it-yourselfers" but when we had our 4 large floor to ceiling windows and sliding door tinted we elected to have a pro do them. In order to get a smooth finish, that lined up correctly with the glass without bubbles or wrinkles it was worth having someone install the film. I think it cost around 300$ (maybe less) for someone to install it. We used a three M product, and it has cut down the heat into the room considerably. We used a medium tint and yes the room became somewhat less bright but not at all dark. It has been a year and our eyes have adjusted to it and we think it was to blindingly bright before the window tinting. I would imagine the tinting will last a good long time unless my cat severely scratches it (in fact, the film was placed and integrated on the window so well that I can not see an area that I could even begin to remove it off the window)....See Moreot? Comments (18)I used the 'light' not 'platinum' Not near enough stuff in one bottle, but you can mix your own easily. I found it handy to have a bucket full near where I was working. Yes, it looks very different from the outside during the day and the inside at night. Outside the windows look very dark when the sun is not directly on them and reflective when the sun is on them. Inside at night ( it is difficult to describe and I'm not sure a camera would catch it. ) Do you know the clear plastic they use for wrapping odd shaped gifts. It has a rainbow hue to it when the light hits it? They look kind of like that. We just did the whole front of the house. I'll slowly work my way around the 3 sides that don't face the street now. It has only been a week, and the weather has gotten cloudier and cooler here. I have noticed that the house temperature stays more moderate. It doesn't heat way up in the afternoon as it was doing before....See Moretinting my home windows or getting window screens
Comments (2)One major disadvantage of tinting is that it often will void the window manufacturers warranty. If you have older unwarrantied windows then thats not an issue. Tinting would be a good choice for sealed sashes and picture windows. Since it would cut the UV radiation entering the house and provide you with privacy. For the operating windows the solar screens keep the UV down and the bugs out. Solar screens can also be changed in the years down the road when you get tired of the look. Tinting is not so easy to remove....See MoreEze Breeze vinly tint and window width question
Comments (3)Let me suggest something that you may have not thought of. You could consider having the top panel or two panels be clear and the lower ones be smoke. I have the top panel clear and the lower 3 panels smoke and sort of wish I had 2 top panels clear and the lower panels smoke. The smoke panels are definitely see through but my automatic reaction on entering is always to push them down so that I have the screening or at least the clear panels below eye level. However, I really like the semi privacy that the smoke panels give in the daytime if they are up. (our neighbors can see into our porch from their backyard). When they are stacked at the bottom they are essentially opaque but you can still see out when sitting down. Having the partial smoke panels is also great when the sun is blaring on where you are trying to read- you can double or triple stack the panels in the right position to block the sun as needed.
