Help with layout of built-in shelves around fireplace
Comments (10)Thanks for your feedback. Hadn't thought of glass doors. That would look great, except we have furniture close enough that the doors wouldn't quite open fully, which may be ok, but we also plan on placing books we are currentlyer ading along with a nice basket for daily used toys. I think that would be a great consideration down the road though, and something we could add later. I will not make them the depth of the fireplace, and can't anyway due to windows/trim. They'll be about 13" I think, which is an inch back from the little stub wall on the right. For the top trim on the side bookshelves I was basically going to copy the fireplace trim but with just the two pieces visible, not three. justgotabme that's exactly what I'm thinking of, and good to confirm that it would still look appropriate even though I don't have windows above the bookshelves. What height do the bookshelves go up to for the best look/proportions? You can see the fireplace is basically a three-piece trim. We can do same height as the existing mantle, or just below that mantle shelf (below the top two pieces of trim), or below all three mantle trim pieces....See MorePerfect fireplace built-ins -- please help me to design
Comments (9)chispa, Thanks for your comments. This is not the main TV area. There will be a man cave downstairs with a larger TV. We will put the TV in this great room on some sort of swivel arm so it can be angled towards the viewer. Not sure about speaker location as that is DH's job (and need) in our home too. He is talking about some ceiling speakers as well as some resting in the built-ins. Do you know what the correct spots are for speakers? Yes the depth of the deeper part of the built-ins is 16 inches. I will get DH to recheck that measurement and remind him about the space for plugs, etc. I appreciate the heads-up. bpahhome, Thanks for your help and kind words. The TV will go on a swivel/pullout arm of some sort. It would be great if the remote can work from most seats -- but that may not be possible. Too funny that you have those Danish plates too. I inherited a large collection of those blue plates plus hummel plates and figurines from my Mom. I am trying to find an attactive way to show them off in this new build. Your picture is lovely and a Tom Thomson to boot. Ours is an oil original, but not by such a famous painter. It was made by a Quebec painter some years ago and was also inherited from Mom. Carol Note the colour of the built-ins will be SW Alabaster and they will match the colour of the perimeter cabs in our kitchen. For those who are not familiar with SW Alabaster it is very, very close to BM White Dove (warm off white)....See MoreNeed help with built-ins next to fireplace ???
Comments (22)We are putting swivel chairs on that side so you can easily watch tv/fire or turn and look at the water. Think we'll look for a console for tv. We don't want it up on the stone and not sure about hanging it on the wall. My husband has a lot of audio components to store below tv....See MoreHELP PLEASE fireplace wall with no built ins
Comments (4)Hi Beth - I’m posting just to keep this current in hopes a pro will help you. As an observer, I find a discrepancy between your mantle and surround (traditional) with the vibe of the wood in the walls. The mantle/surround’s proportions and style seem off and maybe it’s part of what’s making it difficult for you. At first glance, I’d remove it, but that’s just my 2 cents....See Moreseitzsar
