Going to the movies
Comments (14)No new movies to report on, however, since this seems to be evolving into a trip tick I'll jump in. Edna...You will be so close to the D-Day beaches when you make your trip over to Paris that if you have never toured that area you really should do so. Versailles is also a must see. DH, DS and I were there in 2006. If you want info send me an e-mail. Cameron...Everytime DH and I see a movie or a travel show about Germany we want to hop on a plane so I fully understand your "instant" adventure. Sounds like a wonderful trip. DH and I are planning a trip in May. I'm doing research now on taking VIA Rail Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. We want to see Niagra Falls and then take the train to the west coast of Canada. I have always wanted to go to British Columbia and see Butchart Gardens, Victoria, etc. We are thinking once in BC we will rent a car to tour around and drive south through Oregon and Wash on to CA to see the Napa Valley. Everyone I mentioned the train trip to says they hear it is fabulous. If any of you have ever done the train trip across Canada I'd love to hear from you. Comments (20)I bring mine and i'm not sorry about it. I find it to be outrageous that any movie theater would need to charge $3 on a single serving of M&M's that they have bought in bulk for $0.50 or less. There is no need for a 500% profit. Fountain drinks are as much as $4.50 for a large, that costs them $0.15. You also can't tell me that they don't make money on the ticket. Movie theater rent the reels of film. They are a "set" price before the movie is released. They can show that movie as many times as they want or can in a day. Anything over that rental cost is pure profit. Don't you think it would be more fair for these movie theaters to have "set" percentages that they mark-up the food & drink? Most high-end resturants only mark-up thier food 23% and that includes all the costs that they accrue for running the "establishment". Just my opinion. I usually don't want food or drink while i'm enjoying a movie but if I do have the craving, i don't hesitate to bring it myself....See MoreThinking about going to the movies tonight.......
Comments (16)I loved Hidden Figures (saw it last weekend). Awesome movie. I'd consider A Dog's Purpose, the trailer looks great. Even though I am a cat person. I know nothing about The Comedian. No desire to see LaLa - I don't like movies about show biz, but that may stem from a school roommate years ago who played the soundtrack for "Funny -- ha ha - Girl" about 50 times a day, and I was too much a milquetoast to break the dang thing. To this day: if the topic is show biz... I'm so outta there you won't ever even see the dust trail!...See MoreGoing to the movies in the 1950s
Comments (37)Does anyone know why the Saturday multi-feature matinees ended? My dad talks about seeing several cartoons, news reels, and a feature when he was a kid in the 30s. Sounds like it lasted thru the 40's and into the 50's, but was entirely gone by the 60's ... why? We still had that available in the sixties. I went in the late fifties and stopped by age 11 (1962) when my friends and I started going to the Friday night movies instead. I babysat 3 young children throughout middle school and high school and on Saturdays I was allowed to walk them to the Kiddie Matinee, drop them off and come back for them a few hours later to walk them home, giving me some paid time off. I loved the formality back then. The theater manager would great everyone personally taking tickets at the door wearing a dark suit. Even at the Saturday matinee. During the kiddie matinee they would have contests and sometimes a live guest between movies. When I turned 12 my mother recruited me as a movie buddy for Wednesday nights. We would have dinner out at some cafe or even at a store counter and then go to the movies. Always sat in the loge area in the good seats. A short time later I went to my first drive-ins on dates and with friends but we continued our Wednesday nights for several years. Another thing that in my opinion used to be better back then was that Disney ran their movies on a six year schedule. That way each generation got to see the Disney classics when they reached an optimal age to view it. It made it special. Just like you used to have to actually go to Disneyland to get mouse ears. Special and magical. A child's first movie experience was usually one of those Disney classics and it was unheard of to take a crying baby into a theater....See Morewildchild2x2
