Sowing Small Seeds
Comments (7)I haven't tried the sand mix method, but have certainly read about it. It makes sense, if it seemed to work for you - then it worked, certainly a bit of clean sand won't hurt your starting mix. I have heard that people use corn meal in the same way, but I would expect that to get moldy. The seeds I have trouble with are the roly-poly pelleted seed. I should use the tooth pick method with those, as I almost always loose a few because they roll right off the tool I use to transfer them from package to tray. (and they are always the expensive ones!)...See MoreA quick question on 'when to sow'!:)
Comments (5)Well one example is, Crossvine,Bignoria capreolate "Tangerine Beauty",and there are many others, some I havent even got to yet,but I am sure are there!:) I know that it is hardy in my zone, would that make a difference? I was thinking I could ws them, because they are hardy and you can direct sow them in the fall,is this the right way of thinking? I would sow half now and if it didnt work out sow the other half later, but with some seeds I dont have that many to experiment with,so I then would have to just wait to sow them and to be honest I dont want to wait to do any of them...lol..but if I have to I will.:)...See MoreCollecting Araucaria seed in So. Comments (1)Rowdy dogs and shade don't mix. The only chance you have in the shade is St Augustine sod. It will show the path the dogs take, but as the dogs age and become less rowdy, those paths will disappear. Leave it mowed at the mower's highest setting all the time. Mow every week or two. Deep water according to air temperature. Here's what I mean... Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
