Sink- One bowl or two?
Comments (23)akchicago brings up a good topic---drain position! This is something I didn't think about when shopping for sinks. Luckily, I ended up with a sink with a drain in the middle (left to right.) It works really well for the way I use the sink. When there are multi functions going on in the sink, it's often important to have the drain accessible to all of them---it's usually the divider between tasks (i.e. sudsy water on right, draining colander on left, drain still free for rinsing hands or veggies or for draining a pot.) When I wash really large items, I usually have the drain stopped up anyway so that the items can soak a bit (and then rinse water ends up running into the sudsy water and hots it up.) A drain positioned off to the side would have been a huge annoyance for me. Our drain happens to be positioned toward the back. A lot of people think it's important to have the drain positioned under the stream of water from the faucet. I haven't found a need for this, maybe not having a disposer has something to do with it. I like having our undersink cabinet as open as possible so having all the plumbing toward the back works for me. Hopefully, this will give you food for thought. Anybody thinking about a sink should think about the way they will use it and choose drain location accordingly. Good arguments can be made for any of the positions but having it in the wrong position (for the way you use the sink) could be an unnecessary annoyance....See More1 basin sink owners--how do you scrape dishes while washing them?
Comments (18)For us, I LOVE my big, single Rohl farmhouse sink--we scrape almost everything into the disposal, and then it goes right into the DW. I cook for 10-12 people two to three times a week, so I'm used to LOTS of dishes/pans. On a big cooking night, I know it's going to be a two-load night. First load (right after scraping) is all the silverware/plates/glasses and anything small. Second load before bed is the big pots/pans/etc. Cookie sheets (which are usually almost spotless--thank you, Parchment Paper inventor!!), I just wash by hand...AND they fit in my sink without spray going all over. I guess if you're one of those people who has to have ALL the dishes done and out of the way PRONTO, this system may not work for you. Oh, and we do use a black drainboard & rack that was only supposed to occasionally be out, but now is ALWAYS out just to the left of the big sink. So anything that has to get handwashed dries in there. My mom is MORTIFIED that we have that out--she hates our single sink for that reason and just got herself a big, deep double sink. And she's thrilled. So don't hate yourself if you really do want a double sink--there are positives and negatives to both! Comments (21)Thanks so much leela4! I know Romy's kitchen and she's helped me out on a few of my threads too - duh - totally didn't clue in! Her kitchen and the adjoining spaces are stunning. The Kohler Iron Tones sink is perfect in her kitchen. I have to put it at the top of my list for its "pretty" factor. Joseph: thanks!! Kohler doesn't seem to show that model on its site (either that or I just can't find it). I'm definitely considering the Vault as an option. I went to a sink store today and found another Kohler that's similar to the Vault - the Strive: http://www.us.kohler.com/us/Strive-32-x-18-5-16-x-9-5-16-Smart-Divide-under-mount-large-medium-double-bowl-kitchen-sink-with-basin-rack/productDetail/kitchen-sinks/1029992.htm The only difference is it has rounded corners vs the sharp corners on the Vault. So glad I posted this. Thanks to all of you, I've now got five good 60/40, low divide options. Will update when I decide which one I choose!...See MoreKohler Whitehaven sink with smart divide
Comments (6)I have a single-basin Riverby, which I love! I've always had Kohler cast-iron divided sinks in the past--not low-divide. I will say that the top edge of the high-divide always seemed to suffer the most from constant contact with pots and pans, and so that area of the sink had many marks that were difficult to remove. I really loved the high-divide for hanging a dish rag, but now I use the Riverby utility rack for that purpose. I love the grates that I am now using--no marks at all in the 2-years since its install, and the function of the grates is wonderful! I don't find the grates difficult to wipe clean, and I only seem to have to do it once in a great while. I don't however have a garbage disposal, so that may be why my grates don't seem to gather much grime. When I need to soak something, I just use a bowl or pot. However, I hardly ever need to soak anything, but I understand that we all have different needs in our everyday function in our own kitchens....See MoreAnglophilia
