Searching for Iron Rose Arbour
Comments (2)I think there is a co. that might have 1 called Gardengate. Don't know if it would be strong enough for a heavy rose. How about a local ironworks company or wroughtiron fence co. They could make you a really strong 1 that they would powdercoat so you wouldn't have to paint it for some time(I'd ask for extra powdercoating, it they do 2 coats I'd ask for 3 as it would be pain to do. I got 1 at "Big Lots" it is heavy but only about 8 ft tall. It requires repainting every couple of yrs. New Dawn gets very tall. You could rein it in so there isn't so much weight, I think the canes can reach 20 ft or more. I seal cuts with Elmer's Glueall. I had a borer get in 1 rose I didn't seal last yr & had to cut it way back, I had gotten in a hurry & didn't go get the glue. Just make sure whole cut end is covered, just takes a sec....See MoreLarge (climbing) rich apricot rose for 'shade'
Comments (3)Thank you very much mighaelg, I appreciate the information, and it sounds like you really know roses! I know I have to be careful with my choice, and I'll probably decide to go with the Westerland just to be safe. It's not that I feel like Westerland is a compromise, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some other obvious choice I was overlooking. I'm not keen to "invite" challenges like blackspot or winter die back, especially since I won't be providing the optimum sun exposure. I really appreciate your input - thank you!...See MoreWhat Climbing Rose to plant with my Wisteria?
Comments (20)Thanks for the compliments and suggestions. Bart 2010 - to answer your question, the rose and the wisteria are planted about 4-4.5 metres apart. The rose is growing up on the left of the photo, just below where the flowers are. The wisteria is planted at the far right of the photo, where that large cluster of blooms is hitting the ground. Overall, the wisteria covers about 11 metres across the fence. But it does send out runners along the ground and tries to put down roots along the fenceline. Plus it is very heavy, so you need a strong wall to support it, like I have. It is really magnificent, and I think worth the effort. I would think the minimum distance apart for planting would be 3 metres, based on the age of my plants. Thanks windeaux for identifying my rose - I've always wondered what it is - it is very pretty and old fashioned, I just wish it bloomed more often, so I could enjoy it for longer! And obviously, the thorns are a bit of a nightmare....See MoreCalifornia rose growers: climbing rose on this arbor?
Comments (6)My mistake was buying many climbers when I first started my garden. It is my opinion that most climbers are just over sized HT's. Make sure what you pick as flexable canes and few thorns. Most of my climbers are fishing pole canes with no flex and would seriously injure a person. I am going to SP Compassion for this reason. If I were to buy a climber, it would be Maman Cochet climber. I am broke at the moment and this is on my list for x-mas from Vintage. But that would be my perfect pergola.....See MoreStephanie, 9b inland SoCal
