Thanks Dan for the info, unfortunatly, blaze and new dawn both bloom on old wood. Golden Showers looks like a nice hardy climber though, and it blooms on new and old wood. Not sure if I would want yellow though- If anyone else has a few more suggestions for a new wood blooming climbing rose? I have been seeing "Shade Tolerant" in the descriptions of some roses (including the Golden Showers) and I figured that would mean they can withstand part shade. I was hoping this meant it could still do well with 3/4 hours of direct sun a day- can anyone clear this up for me? How tolerant is "shade tolerant" when it comes to roses? And of course, if anyone is growing a rose bush/climber/polyantha in part sun, I would love to know which kind it is. Thanks!

Thanks, ya'll! This side of the pergola faces south east, so I thought that would be good sun, but it turns out the house roof shades the lower parts pretty much from after lunch on! Higher up, like on the top of the pergola, will have more hours of sun -- really good sun there, really. But at the base of the plant, it gets shady all afternoon, so something like a tea would get cranky there ;) I don't even mind a lack of blooms lower down on the rose; I just want something that can survive the first 6 feet or so well enough to catch the light and take off from there. (The blooms above head-height are the key ones because the rest of the front garden blooms well at other eye levels. Nobody would notice a bare-legged climber the way it's laid out.) -- Zephy is an idea! I wish she bloomed more, but she probably really does bloom enough (I don't want only one bloom period, but at least 2 big bloom times are good). Mine didn't get tall enough where I had her, but that was a really bad, grafted specimen in an awful spot to boot, lol. The cold winter finished her off. -- Hybrid musks could be great if they get tall enough! Some have interesting enough blooms, yeah. I couldn't think of any that were quite tall, but Lavender Lassie just might do :) Can y'all think of any other really tall ones? I'm not looking for ones that fade to white too much, either, though. That's the problem with some of my big noisettes for this spot -- too pale too fast. New Dawn is also pale, but mine never go white, at least. They stay visible against a white lathe background, just barely so. I'm considering Natchitoches Noisette, because her blooms are noticeable and she'll take that shade, but my other one doesn't seem like she'd ever get tall enough. HMF list up to 15 feet, so maybe she'd work eventually? Also, what about Cl Pinkie? Her pictures look very nice, but I've never grown her.

I've got 3 Sparrieshoops (1xwhite, 2xpink) in very large pots along the verandah. They get morning sun only. They have been in for about 3 - 4 years and are okay - but the one I've got in the garden does much better. Two good flushes, particularly Spring. Mine are a bit leggy at the moment but are healthy and fairly resistant to black spot. New Dawn grows along a pool fence and is a remarkably healthy, disease resistant rose - spot flowers right through the year with best flushes in Spring and Autumn. But it gets full sun. White Sparrieshoop is a particularly pretty rose I think with darker stamens and, for me, is a more prolific flowerer than the pink but that might just be a one-off peculiarity. I'd try two pots if you were planning to cover the clothesline, but good luck - should look great! Barb

Whoa..my 2 Sombreuil are huge!! I live in Willamette Valley Oregon. They arch over a pergola like structure over an entry way into the patio. Canes over 10ft and it is getting bigger and bigger as for wide..I'm going to have to keep adding trellis' along a wall and the side of the house. It is about 3 years old. I do deadhead fairly regularly..at my peril..thorns..but hey it's a rose!! They get sunlight most of the day. I throw a handful of fertilizer once in awhile and water regularly. In the spring it is smothered with blossoms!! Smothered and very fragrant! It dutifully keeps blooming all summer. Can't remember where I got them..Heirloom? I have a Buff Beauty..Great. Eden..beauty!! Wollerton Old Hall is just taking off.
