Living room drapery

In my living room I have one window and that's it :( I am FINALLY updating the drapery and I'm looking for advice on how high to hang them and how wide the rod should be as well as drapery color ideas. In an ideal world I wouldnt have painted the room this dark, but my husband chose the color before we met. We have extremely high ceilings and the window is very large so I feel weird bringing the rod out much further than the window... but every DIY site it telling me the rod should go 6 to 10 inches past the window (width wise)

Depends. Both the drapery material and the lining need to be washable. And even then you take a chance with the fabric stretching, shrinking, or becoming limp because the sizing has been washed out. And then there is the effect of the water on the pleater tape, etc. Is there a tag showing what what the fabric is? If you want to do this at home, you might be better off using Dryel or spot cleaning with dry cleaning fluid. And a really good vacuuming will sometimes remove surface soil. I would not call that color red, more of a rust, an orange, which I really love with your rug, your floor, and your furniture. The color even brings out orange tint of the ceiling beams. I also like the poles as well. I think they make a strong statement. Good luck getting the new leather chair into the living room. Have you shopped around for better mover prices? I have Kirsch fluted wood 2" diameter poles which come in several colors - I bought some on Amazon and years ago at JC Penney's. I have the pineapple finials but they also have round ball finials. I like the new color, and how well it blends with your walls, particularly in a room that is on the small side. However, I think since they are closed all the time, you should give serious consideration to having the panels pleated, and using hooks at the back of the pleats to raise the top edge up to the base of the rings, so that they fit the space exactly, and hang flat and true. The honest answer is, they look messy and half-hearted, and I know you are neither messy nor half-hearted yourself! Just adding more rings won't really solve the problem.

I think your concept of fringe and patterned fabric is perfectly fine. I love the two-tone drapery look, but have only seen it done in stationary panels. It would take precision at all steps in the process - making the drapes, hanging the rods, and hanging the drapes - to ensure that when the drapes were closed, the fringe met exactly. Might your husband find Silhouettes less "funerial" than sheers? (I remember that my first exposure to torchiere lamps was in a funeral home when I was a child, and for the longest time I would make that association when I would see them.)

Well, what do you like?

For me, the advice to hang drapes high and wide doesn't work. High just looks like...I dunno...a receding hairline? But that's what you see as a "recommendation".

Wide, I think the window should show as much as you can, but I like the drapes to overlap the window by 1/4 of the opened drape width...

You have a lovely room--it is dark, but the window and the light fireplace balances a lot of that out...Tell him he did good :)

A good rule of thumb is to multiply your window width by 1.3. This will give you a good size for your rod allowing for stackback. You want your curtains to cover at least some of the glass.

As for height, I think I'd hang the rod about even (maybe slightly higher depending) with the ledge on the other wall. I'd wouldn't hang them too high since that's too much wall space that would show.

I think I'd pick out a lighter color from the rug, to lighten up the room.
