You can order passiflora incarnata from many mail-order nurseries for a very reasonable price. When happy, it can spread, but it's such a favorite host of the gulf and variegated frits, I'd just pull up any suckers that I didn't want. You could also order and plant p. caerulea, which has quite a few cultivars - this seems less invasive. The butterflies like it, but not as well as p. incarnata, at least not in my garden. The red-flowering tropical types - except for at least one hybrid, 'Lady Margaret' - are toxic to the caterpillars, that is, if a fritillary even lays eggs on it in the first place. Plus, they're VERY cold sensitive, and won't come back in the spring in north Mississippi. My 'Lady Margaret' didn't come back - one of its parents is the tender p. coccinea, the other p. incarnata, which I was hoping would give it cold hardiness. Does Hop bush (Dodonea viscosa) grow in that area? It can be trimmed or sheared into a hedge, grows quickly and is drought tolerant when established. Deep green color, dense growth and if you water it well it grows really fast.

I'm no expert with vines but I have 3 jasmine plants growing in my yard. I have two on my arbor and one in the corner of the yard that is growing on my fence. They are not invasive at all and the scent is heavenly. Mine are evergreen but I am in the deep south. I don't know if they would be in Zone 5 or not. I would advise against any kind of ivy as my hubby and I have spent hours upon hours trying to get rid of it. It is highly invasive. These are the only vines I am familiar with.

Passionflowers are so similar to Wisteria. Both of them are beautiful. But neither of them are really wanted in your yard unless you have a way to control their runners for sure. Now that you have the plant (and runners), you could just, as the previous comment stated, cut the runners down to the ground. But the roots are still there, waiting to take over your flower bed. While I hate to suggest it, the only real way to get rid of the runners is to kill the mother plant. I would recommend using Roundup (a lot of it) and hopefully letting the poison seep to the runners through the root system. If you want to keep the mother plant... Don't. Just don't. Unless you save some of it to grow a new one or buy more seeds, the way your first plant is planted won't work. You have to put the plant in a rather large pot in the ground to contain the root system. Now, I've only heard of this being done, so if you want to keep the passionflower, do your own research!
