Some nurseries carry it on the MS coast. This year our Gulfport Walmart even had it. Later in the summer they won't have it. I only find it in the spring.

You can order passiflora incarnata from many mail-order nurseries for a very reasonable price. When happy, it can spread, but it's such a favorite host of the gulf and variegated frits, I'd just pull up any suckers that I didn't want.
You could also order and plant p. caerulea, which has quite a few cultivars - this seems less invasive. The butterflies like it, but not as well as p. incarnata, at least not in my garden.
The red-flowering tropical types - except for at least one hybrid, 'Lady Margaret' - are toxic to the caterpillars, that is, if a fritillary even lays eggs on it in the first place. Plus, they're VERY cold sensitive, and won't come back in the spring in north Mississippi. My 'Lady Margaret' didn't come back - one of its parents is the tender p. coccinea, the other p. incarnata, which I was hoping would give it cold hardiness.

Sherry, I finally located 2 at a local nursery on Monday and picked them up around noon. By the time I got home, one bloom had opened and I twined the vine around an old grape arbor pole and gently hung the flower high looped over a paper clip. It was lovely! However, today when I went out, wind had dropped a 10 ft heavy limb right in the middle of arbor! Broke one azalia in half, knocked Passion pot over but the plant itself is fine. The falling limb broke loose the clothesline wire around top of arbor and that allowed flower to drop to ground. I'm going to enjoy this beautiful flower.

I planted 2 plants in the summer of 2006. One was in the ground and did not come back. The one in a pot did. But 2 was not enough since the Gfs ate every leave, so in 2007 I bopught 2 more to go with the returning one. Once again it was not enough. The newest one died when they ate the leaves. I was paying 24 dollars for these at Andres here on the coast. This spring I tried to transplant the one in the pot and discovered it had grown roots through the bottom. Anyway I ended up killing it. Nothing else came back. Lucky for me that Walmart had LAVENDAR lADIES (8.95) SO I BOUGHT 2. I bought a different one at andres for 23.00 and ordered a maypop online. I also ordered seeds. Now I have three from seeds. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will have enough.

That's odd, MissSherry, in regard to the P. ceurulea, but there are variances in preferred host plants around the country, and then from year to year as well.

Last year, my Gulf Frits preferred the P. ceurulea, over the P. 'Lavendar Lady' (don't know the parentage on it). After it was leafless and flowerless, they went to the Lavendar Lady.
