Kitchen Remodel in Progress - Need Countertop Advice
Comments (6)teapotmissy - Your kitchen is already beautiful. Are your floors going to be wood or something else? I love the look of wood in a kitchen, especially a white kitchen, it really warms up the look. I can see why you want to have the marble on the perimeter - it would really work well and compliment the back splash you have chosen. And a wood topped white island would be striking. That said the reverse would be lovely too - there is not much nicer than a huge expanse of marble in my book. The wood perimeter would "ground" the white cabinets, but might not be as complimentary to the backsplash. But you can put a sample to it and judge - the colors look like the could look nice with wood - just not give you that light feeling the marble and iridescent glass would. I don't think there is a mistake to made in the two options you have, just what is your preference. If you are putting in a wood floor, I think that will add warmth as well. Comments (45)Thanks Lily Spider :) My inspiration photos all have marble counters lol!!! butI think I'm back on track again - I love classic and I wanted real stone so I think thats why I went the black granite route (though I guess this seems strange after considering marble!)… I've always liked honed black granite and I need to be somewhat practical re the kids - one of the reasons for the kitchen reno (besides the fact that we moved here a year ago and the current kitchen is awful) is to provide space for the kids to be able to 'eat in kitchen' at the peninsula during the younger years while they are still messy (i.e. dropping food everywhere) and to provide a place for them to color/hang out etc while I'm cooking…I don't want to be on top of them the whole time which is why I ruled out the stones that etched/stained/scratched - I think the black granite is a good compromise for me and usability for them and will work in well with the other components of the kitchen…thanks for getting me back on track Lily Spider (my husband almost had a heart attack when I said I was second guessing lol)...See MoreCountertops... questions, advice, suggestions... Comments (16)Hey everyone! Thanks for tuning in!!!! Had a fence that was 99% fallen so had to deal with that fun. So.... to answer a lot of questions with pictures.... At big box, we had picked up samples of the solid surface that I had forgotten about. These are the contenders. We went to a slab yard that sells ONLY BY THE SQ FT THAT YOU USE. The slab yard gives free 18 gauge sink. $270 for kitch undermount. $150 x 3 for bathroom undermount. They also only have 3 cm stone. The granite, the two samples in the original photo… this is the first is the smaller of the two. Price on the Colonial White slab is $57.30/sqft. This is the cheap granite everyone has. The larger wonky shaped piece, Royal Blue, is $70/sq ft. $70/sq ft is a little spendy when we are trying to keep the cost a little lower since we are upgrading everything and the home warranty gave builder budget cost. They had a quartz that they called "Ice" at $53.30 Then we went to a fabricator place that only works with quartz. It is supposed to be “The lowest prices in town.” They called it Oceana. It looks like the quartz above, except it had sparkles. There, you have to pay to have the edge rounded just slightly by linear ft. I know when I lean against the counter it isn’t a fun feeling having having a 90’ jabbing into my back. This is the estimate with their cheapest 2cm quartz… I really would love butcher block on the island. I have a love affair with hickory. However, probably an American Maple might be better? I think the look is timeless, but right now it is a trend. Will this still be timeless in 5 years? Then there was the question of the flooring. Yes, that is the flooring we are putting in. The flooring is called Ombre Gray. We picked it so if someone isn’t fond of gray, they can go brown, too. Or white. Some pictures in different perspective and lighting. So there is everything....See MoreKitchen Help - Advice on matching outdated countertops
Comments (6)The oak would work nicely with slate or slate-look porcelain flooring. or, even a porcelain limestone tile. I'd do a 24x24 or 18x18 (no 12x12 tiles!) Lowes has this porcelain tile that resembles slate in a rectangle tile. Ivetta is the name. you could do a Marmoleum. they can come in a sheet or tiles and all diff colors this is the 24x24 porcelain limestone looking tile (tilebar.com) or do a simple oak flooring the other things I'd recommend is finding some hardware for your cabinets for a finished look and removing the white curtain for something in a blind. Inset in the window for a cleaner look. Paint the ceiling a bright white and find some neutral colors you like for the walls. Pale Oak is nice...See MoreJacqueline Ciccone Burns
