Composting clumping cat litter
Comments (33)We no longer have our cat, but while she was alive, we used stove pellets. Stove pellets come in 40lb bags for $10 or less. Pour a quart of pellets in a regular sized cat box, and spray it with 10-15 squirts from a spray water bottle, and a few of the pellets will start to fall apart into sawdust in a few minutes, enough to make it attractive to the cats, and the rest will take care of themselves as the cats use the box. That scanty looking quart will turn into a box full lush cat litter. It will absorb the smell down to nothing, and keep the box fresh for far longer than clay litter. We generally stretched the litter out to twice as long as clay litter. Then, we composted it all in a far corner of the landscape. If I were to get another cat, I'd use it again....See MoreHow do you keep cats from sitting on the clumps?
Comments (21)On mothballs.... 1. http://www.care2.com/greenliving/keeping-cats-out-of-the-garden.html 2. http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extnews/hortiscope/pests/cat.htm From that site, above: "A: I used to recommend mothballs until someone pointed out the obvious; they are toxic and a hazard to cats and children who might pick them up by mistake. Try the natural approach instead. You might try planting a cat litter box of catnip (a member of the mint family) to attract him to a particular spot. In the beds you don't want him in, plant herbs such as lavender, rue, geranium, absinthe or lemon thyme. A German gardener has come up with a plant, coleus canin, which he has found keeps cats at bay. It can be ordered from various garden catalog services in Germany or perhaps your local garden center can obtain it for you. He has also come up with a mixture that is easily made and will keep away just about anything on four paws. ItÂs two parts cayenne pepper, three parts dry mustard and five parts flour. Mix together and sprinkle on areas where you donÂt want cats. Cats donÂt care much for tea leaves, so save the tea bags and sprinkle the leaves over the beds you want to keep him out of. You can try laying large, flat river stones around the digging areas of your bed. Cats love freshly prepared soil (and fresh laundry too!), so putting the stones around would keep kitty from doing as much digging. Finally, you may want to consider installing a sprinkler system that is activated by movement. One or two douses will cure the cat quickly and will also deter prowlers! I know it works because as a little kid I remember we had a cat that liked to use the bathtub. My Mother would dutifully clean up the mess each time and say nothing. Dad found out so the next time the cat was in the tub, the shower kicked on for a few seconds. The cat never used the tub again! Give these ideas a try and let me know which one works or if they all do. Good luck." BTW, I do NOT agree with the bit above about using cayenne pepper, regardless of its proportions. Too great a chance a cat could get it in its eyes. 3. http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf000978.tip.html There are many others articles online about mothballs. But I think I've made my point. :)))...See MoreIs the Cat Palm a clumping palm?
Comments (1)I believe so but I have never tried dividing this one so don't know if it takes kindly to the procedure. Easy to grow with one big IF--easy if you don't forget to water. This is one palm I actually will leave water in the bottom saucer--the other one that I keep in some shallow water is the Majesty. Most palms would rot under these conditions but these two seem to like it....See MoreClumping cat litter question...
Comments (27)I now use the Fresh Step litter I scoop out the poop when ever I go into that bathroom for something (usually at least 2 times a day). I add some baking soda once in a while. Change the litter completely when it looks like it needs it,usually about every 2 weeks(coincides with payday). When I change it the box gets washed out with a cheap shampoo followed by a vinegar rinse. Then sprinkle some baking soda in bottom, followed by 3 to 4 inches of litter. (forget where I heard about using the shampoo to clean with, old wives tale likely, but seems to work, if I use a regular cleaner he acts like its hurting his nose) I have 1 friend that claims to be sensitive to cat litter, if she can see the box she says the whole house stinks, if I know in advance she is on her way and hide it, she doesn't notice any stink, so I think the litter does a good job controlling the odor!...See MoreNancy 6b
