Normally, you hang your rod as close to the crown molding as you can. Using rings and clips will make your curtains hang lower; how much lower will depend on the size of the clips. You'll have to measure, but it surely won't be the 8" you need to have them hang to the floor. That means you'd need 108" curtains and have to hem them.

You can probably get away with the 96" curtains. Get the largest rings you can find, add their length to the 96", and that's the height you should hang your rod. If you can get it at least halfway between the window and the crown, it should look OK.

I’m sure it‘s subjective - per this blog, rod height @ 1/2 to 2/3 the distance between top of window and ceiling. Since the rings can add a couple of inches of height, the 96” standard height panels may be ideal. Can you order one panel and test it out by pinning to the wall?

I'd hang panels as high as possible. purchase the 108 or 120 inch standard size and hem them to fit. If 120" you will have bonus fabric for DIY projects, like a table runner, placemats, or lumbar cushions for chairs or other.

If floor to bottom of crown is 101.5 (not 104.5 as I was figuring), 96" will be just about right. That will put your rod somewhere around 98", your curtains will be 3" taller than your windows, and your rod will be about 3.5" below your crown.

I would not go to the trouble of hemming 108" curtains for an extra 3". I think you're good to go with 96".

ETA: Be careful to check length. Some standard curtains are actually 95". Make sure to look for 96 to get every inch you can.

Eeek. The curtains are expensive enough. I don’t want to pay more to hem!
