New asparagus bed growing fronds instead of shoots.

I am a relatively new gardener. I planted asparagus for the first this year. Due to having a very cold and rainy spring, I was not able to plant it until May 20th. I planted Jersey Knight in a 6" walled bed with no bottom. I planted it 4-6" deep which was kind of a combination of the planting instructions (6-8") and the instructions Mel from Square Foot Gardening recommends (4"). At this time. I am still adding dirt to cover the crowns and will probably cover closer to 8" than six. Every crown sprouted within a few days and in what's been less then 3 weeks since being planted all are turning to fronds. Here are my questions:
1. Is it normal to have fronds so soon?
2. The shoots/fronds are very, very skinny. Will they get bigger as the bed gets older?
