Tan insect eggs on broccoli. Good guys or bad?
Comments (8)Anything that lays eggs on a vegetable plant is 90+% likely to be a pest you don't want. Bugs lay eggs on plants that the young are supposed to feed on. Eggs on veggies almost always equal something squish worthy. I commend you for wanting to know what the bug is (will be) before killing it, that is noble. The sad truth is that while there are zillions of bugs out there, many good, many harmless when it comes to veggy gardens the ratio is turned upside down. Most bugs in a veggy garden are either harmful or there to eat harmful bugs and bugs that lay eggs on veggies almost always are the harmful ones. Eggs on veggies=squish....See MoreWho are these guys and are they good guys?
Comments (11)cdsetx8, You may not have said "get rid" of them. However, the link you posted tells ways to dispose of them and chemicals to use including BT. Sorry you were offended by my comments, but your posting left me with the wrong impression. njmomma, the kids will love watching these guys. The moths are cool. I've raised them in the classroom. Put about 4 inches of soil in a clear container, cover with the leaves, and you may be able to witness them forming pupae through the sides of the container. An old 2 liter pop bottle with the top cut off works great....See Morecaterpiller ID help? Bad guy or???
Comments (9)They will never go away. If you spray them it will only kill the baby budworms, then the adults will lay more eggs, and you will have to spray again all year until winter. They are endemic. Pat Welch, who wrote that book on SoCal goardening, says to begin spraying in April with the maiden flight of the budworm moth at around the time of the full moon. I have to spray my garden every week. Thank goodness for BT. I use a hand held squirt bottle so I can avoid getting BT on the milkweeds and passion vines, where the butterfly larva grow up. I'm sorry. Renee...See MoreSquash Vine Borer - Egg fell in dirt? How long these guys around?
Comments (9)Here is what I do also.... I have a syringe I got from a printer cartridge refill kit. I inject BT solution into the stems when I see any signs of damage. One of the best indicators of damage is when vines start looking swollen and start yellowing. Obviously frass is another sign. (but that almost a bit too late) Instead of cutting the plant a lot and causing it much damage, I do this (I saw this on Youtube) : When you see frass, or when you see a swollen yellowing part of the vine (that also indicates they are in there). Then open a small hole in the vine with a small knife... pretty small no bigger than a pencil. If frass is coming out then the hole is already there but you might try to make it slightly larger. Then inject some soap solution (water and ivory soap mixture). I have done it with my needle, but saw a guy use a spray bottle on "jet" mode, and spray it up the hole. The borer will either be forced to come out of the hole, where you can kill it, or the soap will kill it....See MoreLisa Adams
