Even though they are not all that attractive, what about just purchasing the slider vertical blinds (from Lowes/Home Depot)? I don't know how much money your daughter wants to invest, since she's renting-unless she's staying long term. The blinds will serve their purpose well, are affordable, will allow as much or as little light in as your daughter desires, and will give her complete privacy as well. You can always dress them up with a swag of fabric on top. Just a thought.

Thank you all for your opinions! @ Kayz5, These windows are facing the street/front but the main entrance to the house is in the back. A driveway takes you to the "back" where there is a main entrance door. The doors on the front of the house would not be used so much in winter. I will have to think about your suggestion of mounting close to the ceiling. That could work except that I had hoped to leave the trim unobstructed. @tibbrix, yes we are in Maine and that is a view of Frenchman's Bay. I am leaning towards the white minimalist cellular shades (which actually are rated for the highest R value). I plan to investigate those comfort tracks, but don't know if I'm going to like the looks of the tracks. I don't have the wall space on either side of the curtains---the few inches of wall between the window trim and the door trim has light switches on them. Annie sure did supply an array of possibilities! I have searched HOUZZ umpteen times looking for "window shade" ideas and none of these examples showed up! There are some similar to my set up. You could remodel that hearth and do away with the part near the window :) I like the idea of hanging the panel on the left side of the window and just living with the weird drape over the mantel when they are closed. But I think I would put up a ceiling height valence and do wood blinds. You can change the fabric of the valence as you wish to change the look and the wood blinds are gorgeous and give a room a nice feeling.if you are worried about the height of the blinds then do the top up/down honeycomb ones in a similar color to the walls to make them visually smaller. The window will still be the star of the show and the valence will be the supporting cast that draws the eye.

I have several 15ft sliding glass doors and traverse rods which is what you need are very expensive in that size. I plan on doing lightweight ripplefold curtains. I did find a company that has the traverse rods and ripplefold tape for a good price. https://curtainrodconnection.com/ I just received my first set and haven't installed them yet but am hoping for a decent quality.
