garage conversion advice
Comments (9)Yes, it will be too narrow. So here's the rest of my opinion: -The most prominent feature of a house should never be the garage doors. -The front entry should be clear, welcoming and should guide the visitor with visual cues. -A front door that's hidden in a dark tunnel is awful. -A home needs a "front side" - that's not always the side facing the street (yours isn't). Building the garage in front of your existing would completely block the "front" of your house. Here's an idea: Put the new garage behind the existing and have the garage door on the side of the house instead of the front. Rework the drive a bit --to the right of where the car is parked --with pavers so that it's a "drop off area" that helps to emphasize the "front" of the house. You have a nice house. Don't mess it up with a remuddle job that gives you more sq feet but ruins the house in the process....See MoreInspo/ideas for garage conversion
Comments (8)There is some variety in local codes related to garage conversions, so before you get too much further, see what you're up against there. If you do convert the garage are you going to want to build another one next to it or in front of it for the car? If so, another code question as to how close you can get to the lot line. To answer your question about putting in a window where the door is, all windows are really custom because they have to fit a specific opening size which isn't the same from house to house or even sometimes in the same house. So there are multiple configurations you could get, but it won't be cheap. Do something in the same style and scale as the other windows on the front of your house or else it will scream garage conversion. If you want specific advice you need to post a picture of the front of your house....See MoreGarage Conversion
Comments (23)One of my favorite conversions is from Kurt Krueger Architects in Los Angeles that I came across a few years ago. They added a lovely front private patio and simple plantings in front of the old garage. Instead of closing off the garage door opening, he replaced it with a slider opening to the patio. So you are actually making the existing driveway your own private oasis. This might be an inspiration for you. Just remember to make sure there are no city ordinances preventing you from removing the garage and closing in a patio street side....See MoreGarage Conversion Windows
Comments (4)Not enough information. For instance, if converted to any habitable room it will require enough glass and operable opening size to meet light + ventilation calculations. If a sleeping room, a window needs to be emergency escape rated by the manufacturer (so wider) and the bottom placed at a maximum height. If the garage is much lower than the rest of the house, then that may be strange to have really high heads or sills of a window. If you are infilling a former 16' wide garage door within say a larger brick facade, the aesthetic of the size and placement of windows should be addressed. Or, on the other hand, if the conversion went from habitable space to garage space, then none of it matters....See Moregeoffrey_b
