Should I be concerned my peach and apricots haven't leafed out yet?

Planted a nectarine and apricot last spring -- neither flowered, but the nectarine is fully leafed out while the apricot has barely a handful of leaves attempting to unfurl; attempting is the key word here. They are planted right next to each other. Same story with the peach, and this is her third year in the ground; she was quite lush last year and put on a lot of growth but barely a leaf on her this year. Just wondering if I should be patient (but c'mon, its June already...) or attempt to return the apricot before the 1-year warranty is up.

return the apricot for credit... and try something else ... they just wont work in MI ...

dad had one in the yard since i was about 5 years old ... once in all those years.. did it get fruit to set ... and just about the day they were full size rock hard green... the tree rats with fluffy tails ate them all ...

else.. they are subject to cold winter.. frost or freeze at bloom ... and rarely setting fruit ..

but other than that.. they are a rather nondescrip green tree ... lol ...

btw.. dads tree was in livonia.. so fully suburban ....like you.. rather than my farm prairie adrian mi ... where my 15 year old tree has never had a fruit set ... dad bought that one for the kids also .... lol ...

Scott, glad it helped. I know I didn't contribute to this thread but these guys really know how to get the duraforce engine running better. In my opinion this should have never had to be done. People should not have to re-jet a lawnmower engine. Toro should have went with a higher quality carb. I realize they had to meet EPA emmisions tests but I'll bet some other carb could have made the grade. Those plastic carbs on that engineering marvel just threw the whole engine off for me. I've heard people say that the D-400's were a tinkerers engine but I'd say the duraforce is in there too. Good luck with it, Neal

If the bulbs are still viable then it's definitely not too late to plant them. Right now is the perfect time for planting bulbs. However, I question how viable bulbs are that have been sitting on the edge of your garden since June especially with the drought that we had this summer. Bulbs are tough but I'm not sure they are that tough. Do the bulbs still feel solid to the touch (viable) or do they feel dried out or squishy (both not viable). There is not way that you can save them for planting next fall. Bulbs are not viable for that long.

This is where I am at, DH seeÂs us remodeling kitchen in three or more years and I see us remodeling our kitchen in the next year or earlier. So, Right now I am more in the process of elimination as far as cabinet brands go. Many earlier brands have been eliminated due to size issues as in I want and need deeper and taller wall cabinets and prefer little to no fillers. Also, cost has been a big factor. I have a basic idea of layout but need help in changing the nook area and windows. Some appliances will be reused but we will replace refrigerator with the kichenaid 42" built-in French door paneled and replace the microwave with the adventium. I have the countertop narrowed down to three or four and know exactly what I want for the backsplash, still unsure of wall splash behind stove though. The kitchen sink has been narrowed down to two choices and cab hardware to three. I know what I want for lighting but havenÂt found exactly the right one, I will know it when I see it. Still tossing around the idea of wood range hood verses stainless. The doors of my dreams are simple $$$applied moulding but with most likely end up with nice raised panel for style of home. Husband thinks I spend way too much time thinking of and planning for the kitchen.

Great comments above from Jerry, Gill, and Hyn. Yes, please do add 1/3 more of something gritty and non organic to your soil. It should be loose and very fast-draining and dry out sooner rather than later. I don't know where you are ... please tell us ... and whether it's winter there. It sounds as if you have the trees indoors. These are tropical and will never get enough light for growing indoors unless you use grow lights. But that's OK ... They will just go dormant or semi-dormant, taking a rest until Spring. That and culture shock is what you are seeing in terms of leaf drop. Do not water regularly while indoors during cold weather, just enough to moisten lightly and allow to dry completely in between. Otherwise, they may very well rot ... either from the tips or roots. Tip rot travels downward and root rot upwards and needs to be excised. To answer your question about leaving fine feeder roots exposed so they can grow thick ... no ... As Gill states, those need to be in contact with substrate and are there to feed. Otherwise, they atrophy and die off. That's OK ... There are more underground. That one big white exposed one needs to be buried more. You can raise it about an inch but that's enough. Otherwise, that suddenly exposed white section will burn in the sun. Adeniums should be gradually raised, about an inch a year. Please take a close look at all your branch tips. If anything is turning black or mushy or any kind of soft, prune it diagonally / . Make sure there is no black/brown left on the cut stem. That is rot and can potentially travel down the tree. When you prune, you will activate more branching. It DOES look like you have flower buds beginning on one of the tips. I hope it blooms for you. If they fall off due to culture shock, don't dismay. They will bloom again after Spring. Once Spring arrives in your region and you notice active growth, slowly begin increasing water up to more or less twice a week on hot mid-summer days. Also, you will want to begin feeding once in active growth ... Feed at 1/4 strength every week for best results. Last, but not least, you will want to acclimate your trees to more light in the spring. Move little by little until you can have them in full sun all day during the Summer. As a safety measure, I do not recommend leaving adeniums outdoors when overnight temps fall under 50 degrees F. They are succulents and can freeze. How many times do I have to tell you I'm no longer suburban LOL!

According to MSUE, apricots are hardy to zone 5 (which I am); I realize frost can cause no fruit, but the tree itself should be fine --> at this point, I'm concerned about the paucity of leaves, not sure what's going on there.

you live in METRO detroit ... by definition .. its suburban ... if you can see more than one neighbor.. its suburban ... if your roads are paved... etc .... just because you have a couple horses.. does NOT make you rural ... lol ...

can we at least agree.. your are not urban ... in the city ...

anyway ... the easiest way to avoid grief.. with apricot.. is to avoid them ... in SE MI ... i presume you will agree we live in SE MI????

i highly recommend you get that refund.. and be done with them ...

i have banged my head on the barn called apricot ... for decades.... i highly recommend you avoid said banging ... it gets old fast ... do as i say.. not as i did .. imo ...

ps: anywhere around metro detroit. that is a claimed z6 .. is.. in my book.. living the effect of being in the suburban weather effect ... and the only problem with that claimed z6 ... is that every couple years.. they get socked with the reality.. that they are really z5 .... like everything else for hundreds of miles... imo.. the only true z6 in MI .. is the west coast fruit belt .. but i digress ...

The lawyer in you is showing, Ken... You're not the only who can argue - I'll give it right back to you: I never said I was ruraI. I would most appropriately term it a semi-rural area. I am ~1 mile from county line, as far west in the metro area you can get. I am NOT zone 6; according to the USDA zone map search by zip code, I am zone 5b. Much of the area I live in is zoned RURAL RESIDENTIAL. Regarding your statement about paved roads, a good deal of the roads out here aren't paved, including mine. To drive home the point further that I am not living in what is commonly termed "suburbia" -- there are working farms here, and I'm surrounded by ten-plus thousand of acres of state land. So there LOL!

Anyway, I think I shredded my receipt from the tree -- I'll have to call to see if they have my purchase in their system, and ask if they will take it back if it's almost dead, not dead-dead.

They grow apricots quasi-commercially here. We have long, often slow springs, so most years they get at least some fruit from them. So the big question may be how close to the lake are you?

It can also be a question of variety. Some cultivars of peaches and apricots are hardier than others.

Do you mean one of the Great Lakes? Maybe 40-50ish miles to the west.

I called the nursery, and they do have my purchase on file, they said it is fine to return by June 15th (date per policy), they won't give me any hassle. The weather is supposed to be nice all week with a good warmup starting Tuesday; if it doesn't put out leaf growth by next weekend, I'm going to take it back. The peach isn't under warranty anymore (this would have been her third season).
