Endless Summer Hydrangea Question
Comments (4)Thanks ginny. These are both QVC specials that, as I said, were originally intended to get pounded into the dirt by load after load of heavy snow falling off of the metal roof. Then, they were going to get crunched by the tractor driving over them to snowblow the piles of ice and snow into the woods. All in all a tough winter existence. Anyway, under those conditions sticks in the spring weren't a consideration. I'll try to find a better home for the hydrangeas. I just moved the wood pile away from the east side of the house (actually the garage/'carriage house'/ or 'barn' as they call it up here) at the end of the extension to the new wood crib on the farmer's porch and ended up with a 25-foot long, three-foot wide patch of bare ground. I tilled it and just planted some roses, a couple of gold splash euonymous, a dwarf mugo pine and some dwarf daylilies. I'll bet I could squeeze in three hydrangeas. Thanks for the sage advice. narcnh...See MoreEndless Summer Hydrangea Centerpiece
Comments (19)Bonnieann, I am sorry I forgot to tell you how great your Endless Summer arrangement looks. My DD has a couple of those plants in her yard, I think I should make an arrangement for her. I am in Zone 5b. The Annabelle plants do get full sun for almost the entire day. The PeeGee plant is on the north side and my garage blocks the sun from the west so that plant is in the shade most of the day. I don't do anything special as far as growing the plants. In the spring I wait until the buds start appearing on the stems then I cut off top portion and remove any dead stalks. As far as drying the flowers, I just leave them on the plant until they are pretty much dry on their own and then cut them and put them in a vase without water. I don't save them from year to year. They are fine for the time I have them in my arrangement. PeeGee, the blooms on both types of my hydrangea plants are smaller this year than other years. After a long colder than normal winter, we had a very cold spring and below average summer. I think that affected the size of the blooms. As an aside, here is my favorite floral arrangement, that I photographed last weekend. Comments (79)@Liz Bell summer romance prefers full sun here in the south and they do not burn in all day sun. As long as they get 6 or more hours of sun it does well Mine got afternoon dappled shade after 1 pm from a nearby tree until the sun shifted enough in late afternoon to provide more direct sun. So if your areas can provide at least 6 hours it should be great. Kordes here seem to prefer all day sun compared to Austin’s. Our zones are probably not very different since I am in alabama...See MoreSummer Crush hydrangea
Comments (7)Someone sent me an email about it. One of the wholesalers probably. It is a Bloomstruck competitor, a rebloomer mophead. The only thing that attracted my attention was a comment dealing with with wilting, something on the leaves that minimizes it. Or maybe I misunderstood its purpose. They used a weird phraseology for it, heat something, maybe heat melt. Figured I would see a clearer comment later as they formally introduce it and people ask for clarification long enough that they reword it. What have you heard so far or seen. My cousin from Chicago was interested in going to the show but had a short family conflict. I need to ask her if she went. How was it for you? Anything else that was interesting of other hydrangeas or other plants or garden gear? I mean, aside from that hydrangea?...See Moreguyground
