Standard roof cap vs. Round (flat roof) cap
Comments (1)I haven't found snow a problem with either type of cap on my house in S. NH, although differences in detail between mine and these, as well as in roof slopes, may make one or the other better in your application. For flow, attempt to determine for your duct size what the dimensions of the respective choices are. Then you can calculate the flow area. Correction for bird screening may have to be approximate. Alternatively, and better if you succeed, ask the manufacturer for the pressure drop vs. flow characteristics. kas...See MoreWhat type roof cap for range hood vent in Maine?
Comments (0)Hi- hope this is the right forum to post this in... it doesn't say HVAC in the title but it's the closest mach- also posted in Appliances... We're installing a 600 CFM range hood in a one-story ranch house in southern Maine. The guy at the appliance store was saying something about "if you can afford it, get one of those chef-hat type spinning roof caps". He thought that the lower-profile ones might cause ice dams because they spit the hot air right onto the roof... and/or that snow on the shallow roof pitch (5:12) might cover and block the low-profile type. Is he being overly cautious? Clearly we want our vent to work as optimally as possible and avoid roof leaks, but we're also on a budget (and DIY.) Related question: what type of damper is best and where to install it? I have read to install it at the thermal break, i.e. at the attic insulation level. Comments on that? Thank you!! Comments (0)We'll be installing an approx 600 CFM exhaust hood through a barely-pitched (~1:6) roof in San Francisco. The feed is 6" round ducting. What kind of cap is reasonable for use? As this is (hopefully) a DIY project, something that I can seal in place without hot mopping would be nice. The (aging) roof is (forgive my imprecise terminology) rolled composite, like shingle material. Something like the Fantech RC6 seems functional, but with a "retail" price of around $70-80 seems excessive. Are there other options worth considering? Thanks! Comments (17)On a side note, we are so blessed to know all our firefighter friends. These guys are all in different professions - both white & blue collar. We have nearly every trade represented on the FD! They’d be good friends regardless, but it is a relief to know these guys personally. This HVAC guy is now retired from both jobs, but he was the maintenance engineer at a major university here in Mpls, and his soldering skills are unmatched! He helped us take off all the old valves in the laundry room and half bath to make tiling easier and just to update them. Unfortunately, the caps they used didn’t come off when it came time to put the new valves on. Apparently they had some brass in them. IDK. So they had to cut them off and make the copper even shorter. The new floor was thicker and a couple of them were already really close. His plan was to put compression fitting on, but those two that were short were impossible. He finally decided to solder them, but he was working inside the tile! The hole was small and he was really concerned. We were dangerously close to having to rip out the basement ceiling. He managed to get them both on perfectly and there was a collective sigh of relief! He’s got skills! I think he deserves dessert when we take them out for dinner, ha!...See Moretw_floyd81
