Need Advice Buying Baseball Hats Online

I want to order two baseball hats for older grandsons' Christmas gifts. I know I want an adjustable strap in the back. I know I want an all green Packers hat with a big G on the front and a Cincinnati Reds plain red hat with a C. Both adult size. But as I read reviews, I am concerned with so many negative comments and concern with the style of the cap part itself. Anyone with experience here who can advise me?

I buy my sports caps at Lids. Very good quality and a fair price.

Lids sell the "official" cap. The nicest being the 59FIFTY series for $40.

Just an FYI. Sporting baseball cap styles change every year. My husband collected a couple of teams caps and no two were alike unless a store/vendor had last years model. Most teams have a link of their websites to places that sell the "Official" cap. Many places that sell the caps sell knockoffs. Based on my experience with him do not remove any labeling of any sort allow the receiver to do that.

garydewater: That's about 1/2 the price as a new one and 135 hours is about 3 years of average homeowner use (about 40 - 50 hours/year). If it is in good condition and not been abused it sounds like a pretty good deal. You did not mention what year model it is. I have an acre and 1/4 myself and usually rack up about 40 - 50 hours/year depending on what projects I'm working on. I mow, dethatch, aerate, overseed, pull a cart loaded with rocks, firewood, etc... and mulch my leaves in the fall pulling a lawn sweeper to collect them. You can usually save a bunch of $$$ buying a good used quality tractor. Just make sure it has been well taken care of by the previous owner. If it looks rough it probably is rough. An engine coated in oil, grass clippings, etc..., faded paint, cracked seat and weathered plastic components typically indicate that it was left outside in the elements and not well cared for. 1. Reel Mower --> not recommended, miss a couple weeks and you are hosed as they don't work well on tall grass or long stems. I like the electric - corded models - same $ as a fancy reel mower 2. Wheel Barrow --> yes, agree with renee :) If you plan to mix concrete often get a metal one... 3. Pruners --> Felco, cheapest price is at Frostproof. 4. Rake -- bamboo if you will rake around plants, but it's better to leave the leaves there anyway. For the lawn the big plastic one is best 6. Shovel - get a digging fork and spade which have the U or T handles. Stainless steel looks nice :) 5. Tiller --> biggest waste of money I ever made... Don't get one - layer mulch/amendments on surface and 'fork' in. 6. Composter --> also a waste of money, just make a pile 3x3 or use some old fence boards to make open bin(s) 7. Hoe --> get a scuffle or hula hoe, small and narrow for weeding around plants 8. Garden clogs/ gloves that will fit a small hand. I buy gloves regularly, the Nitril coated ones are great for touch, but wear quickly, aren't padded and make your hands stink :) Expensive leather ones are cool, but turn your hands yellow...clogs are whatever slip on shoes I have which are no longer clean enuf for work. 9. Anything else you use often.. Gopher traps...Sluggo...Garden Knife... Automated Watering System !!! Chad

Mahoney's sold some really nice wide-brimmed garden hats for men and women last year--don't know about this year. Also check out travel catalogs online such as Magellans and Travel Smith. Great quality on all their products and they sell a number of wide-brimmed hats, including styles with built-in SPF. I also bought a nice hat with a securing loop like our old cowboy/girl hats. It was from LL Bean and they may still have it. Alas, I went swimming in it and it seems it is not waterproof.... Wind is a factor to consider. Annoying to be gardening and have your hat keep blowing off. My most unusual hat story is from just a few months ago. I was touring the Villa Gamberaia north of Florence and my favorite hat blew off and into a renowned water feature. No one else was there but myself and a friend so I rolled up my pants and went wading. The Italian algae definitely adds a certain something to that particular hat.

Ok let's talk about codes. I have found the CABO/ICC building codes to cover the critical design elements of a house very well with only a few exceptions because the minimum is often the optimum for such a lightly loaded short structure. If you designed joists using the formulas you were taught in school they would be the same as you would get using the code tables except in borderline cases the code always rounds upward and doesn't adjust for poorly graded lumber, etc. The IRC requires LVL's and I-joists to be designed by an engineer but in Maine the state law allows a builder to do that if he/she submits the manufacturer's sizing tables and the loading conditions with the drawings for the building permit. The state law was changed to exempt a builder from the prohibition of practicing engineering for a house in 07, so you can imagine what an architect's license means in Maine. I don't think Vermont even has a residential building code yet and there are other states that are similar or where the code is adopted or not adopted by each county and enforcement is not consistent due to lack of staff. Anyway, the biggest deficiency to the codes that I know of is the flexibility of floor joists. The deflection limit at maximum loading is intended to prevent ceiling plaster from cracking and is not very helpful. Many long span joists are legal but excessively bouncy and there are no simple rules of thumb that eliminate this problem. I tried to write one and a week later I couldn't understand it. Unfortunately bridging and blocking have been found to do little to stiffen typical joist sizes. I also find the ICC foundation section to be inadequate but the code allows the option to use ACI318 which is an excellent standard and design guide but any code standard must be limited to a maximum amount of unbalanced fill; an engineer would be needed to design a cantilevered retaining wall. The code deals with typical regional wind and snow loads pretty well but not high wind, drifted snow and earthquake loads. At any rate, I won't design anything without an engineer involved even if he isn't required to stamp the drawings. I like his insurance policy a lot. I think a contractor could use the building code as a defense in court but it would be of less use for a licensed design professional. For me the medical analogies are interesting but not realistic. It is still acceptable in certain parts of the US to build your own house without any oversight or control by anyone (except possibly the local electric coo-op) and this idea is considered a right to many. I think the practice of medicine has advanced considerably farther than the house building industry.

For the official, authentic team caps shop at the team store, or look for the tag that says they are MLB Authentic (or whatever the actual wording is).

Team caps, and other clothing is also sold by authorized dealers. Lids is an authorized dealer and they sell the officially licensed gear.

You'll pay more for licensed gear. If you see a hat for $9.99, it's not the real deal.

New Era is the company that manufactures official Major League Baseball (MLB) caps. 59FIFTY is a model of baseball caps made by New Era, and they are the official on-field (fitted) caps worn by the players.

Yup, I have three 59Fifty caps. Cleveland Indians, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Detroit Tigers. Lids is my choice dealer.

shielajoyce - Are you referring to the part of the baseball cap that projects out over the face - as in the "front" of the cap? I ask because I had a feeling that this was what you were referring to in your post.

I paid a ridiculous amount two years ago to buy one for my husband because he needed a new one (and it had to be black or navy). The front part of the cap had "lines" in it and looked different than his old ones - and he didn't really like it. It did have the adjustable strap at the back.

This year he bought 3 new ones - and I made sure he was with me to try them on. Despite some looking the same as others on the rack they did not sit the same on his head - cut I guess.

The ones he ended up with were of course more expensive but look a lot better on him. Of course, everything is more expensive in Canada!

As long as you get hats made by New Era, they should be fine. But, because there are a lot of counterfeits in "fashion" these days, make sure you buy from an authorized retailer. The words "New Era" are a link to the website, where you can see all of the caps they make.

To see just Green Bay Packers click those words. There are 161 different items from which to choose. You can see up to 48 "per page." And, in looking at the first 48, you can see that there are different shapes to the cap part.

To see Cincinnati Reds click those words. Again, different cap shapes and 157 different items.

Perhaps you can have your grandsons tell you which shape they want/would like.
