Questions about staircase remodel
Just starting to make decisions about the staircase. Currently it's all carpeted. We need to replace the carpet in all of upstairs and this would include the staircase. DH doesn't like having wall-to-wall carpet on the staircase so wants to look at other ideas. What are the options?
Wood treads: wouldn't these be slippery? If we decide on wood treads, can we see how it goes and decide later if we want to add a runner? If wood treads, white risers or stained risers?
Runner over wood treads: isn't that a waste to cover up expensive wood treads with a carpet runner? Does the runner damage the finish or put holes in the wood tread underneath, in case we, or a future owner wants to remove the runner?
Wood on the both sides with carpet in the middle? Does this look nice?
Carpet on stairs but wood on the landings? It's a wierd stair case that is split on the bottom, then there are 2 landings where it comes together, and then goes the rest of the way up to a top landing. Wood on the top landing and then change to carpet for the bedrooms?
I'm looking at HOUZZ pictures and IMO the wooden staircases look the nicest with or without runners.

Comments (2)Trust me on this....hardwood floors with no carpet on them are very slippery for people who are wearing socks. Ask me how I know. Luckly no serious injuries resulted, but I know my daughter ended up sliding down the stairs on her butt more than once when she was little before I got the stairs carpeted. I would either use hardwood with carpet or tile. They make tile that has a rougher finish that would be safe on stairs....See Morequestion about attic stair insulation
Comments (2)I built my own using a 4 X 8 sheet of 1 inch foam insulation. I found a set of plans to do this. Here is a link which has a similar plan. You can use even thicker foam insulation if you want a higher R-value. http://www.jacksonemc.com/Do-it-Yourself-Energy-Projects.43.0.html You may have to modify it a bit to fit your stairs. It was not very difficult to build. I put down weather stripping on the wooden frame. The box sits on the weather stripping which makes a tight seal. I even used the left over pieces on the sides in order to give it extra strength and weight. When I go into the attic I simply push the box so that it stands up on one of the long sides. To close I just lower the box into position onto the weather stripping. For about $25 you can build a custom fit cover. I think the key is the tight fit to stop air infiltration. Comments (7)Thanks for clarifying the sanding blocks. I thought they were pine also, mainly because of the knots, but lots of people kept saying throwing the word plywood around. Although neither is really desirable for this. The first photo I posted is the basement door at the bottom. The 2nd two photos were during the process when the house was built. I posted them to show the steps underneath. The basement door will be open most of the time once finished and I had wanted to run the basement flooring (pergo) in that landing butting into the stairs. The white spindles were actually oak and I ended up painting them. (I didn't think out the stairs real well) IRL, I don't think they look real grainy. Also, that odd piece of trim along the stairs will come off and the wall will be drywalled right. I know you can only put so much lip stick on a pig but I think I'll probably take the plunge. If it does look bad I believe a runner could help it out until we could replace the treads and railings/newel. It won't be for awhile but I'll post an update if I follow through....See More

4 years agoC Martin, thank you. I'll talk to the contractor about that. Here is a wooden top landing in a HOUZZ picture, and then they transition to carpet for the bedrooms.
Here is a picture of the middle landings with wood:
In this picture, it looks like the carpet is not a runner over wood treads, but is set in between the side wood pieces. This looks nice to me. Do you think this kind of idea would work on my staircase?
