Question about flooring on stairs

We are buying a split level home. You can enter from the ground floor (off the garage) or between 1st & 2nd floor, but the main living is the 2nd floor. We will be tearing out the existing carpet that is there now. I want to tile the entry ways on the lower floor and main entrance, and we will put hardwood on the 2nd floor. My question is about the stairway. I was thinking of tiling the stairs. DH thinks that will be too slippery and wants hardwood. I feel that hardwood will get worn quickly. There is not much of an entryway, and no space for a bench, so I think people will come up to the 2nd floor to take off coats & shoes. We live in New England, so snow, mud & water are always a factor.

Does anyone have any advice. Anyone with a split level home, how does your entry way work out? TIA
