Thank you for replies. I came across Calathea roseopicta, but because it still looks a bit different I wasn't sure if that was it. The soil gets to be dry eventually. It's wet only if I've watered it recently. I watered it yesterday and today it's still wet, though. The pot and the soil are the original ones it came in, and it was fine in it for a while. Anyone has any ideas what I should try doing?

Actually, in my experience, the most common color for spider mites is a reddish brown, though I've seen beige before. If it makes webs like a spider mite, and it sucks plant sap like a spider mite, it's probably a spider mite. I went through this myself a while back with Calathea ornata, which is documented at my blog. I was not as diligent about trying to remove the mites as I could have been, but even so, a lot of time was wasted on them, and in the end nothing actually improved. Mites can be very persistent on Calathea and related genera (Maranta, Ctenanthe, Stromanthe). You could try soapy water, though I think it's probably not likely to help that much in this case. Neem oil may work better, and placing the plant outside in a protected spot might also help, but if it were my plant, I'd be likely to call it a lost cause. Then again, it wouldn't be my plant, because after my Calathea ornata experience, I swore off Calatheas forever, so my judgment about what is or isn't a lost cause might be a little glitchy in this case. Someone else might be more encouraging.

Hi there! So yes, the soil was staying very wet. But also, the leaves have brown edges that are curling and the dark green is becoming a yellowish green on new leaves. Some of the mature leaves have also changed to yellow. it isn't praying properly, but it remains perky in structure and isn't wilting really. All the leaves are just... dying, it seems. If I removed all damaged leaves, there would probably only be about 5 or so remaining. I planted it in a terra cotta pot with Miracle Gro African Violet soil, so the pot is breathable but the soil mixture is known to retain water. I spray its leaves quite often, group it with other plants, sit it on a grate with a plate of stones underneath, nothing is working. It's near a south facing window that is covered by large trees but still allows in sunlight.
