I spoke with a grower yesterday who removes the plant and actually spray washes the whole root system to see where the best place to take divisions might be. This seems to me to be a very good way to divide. Some people say it's best to halve a plant, rather than trying to get more than two divisions. As to Yellow Crookstem, it is extremely aggressive in growing rhizomes that travel fast and far. I've read it's the most aggressive of the yellow culm bamboos. Keep it in pots, unless you want to trench around it several times a year - cutting back the rhizomes. Trenching isn't difficult, as you must know by now if you read the forum. It's a very beautiful, dark green plant in my ground. Your plant is light green, according to the photo. I think you would see quite a change if you decided to get it in the ground.

Joe, Wait until it's warmer is my suggestion - it looks like it's doing fine. OTOH, if you're able to keep it warm during its getting used to new digs, why not? It will be that much happier when spring gets here in full.

It depends on the grass, because some grow more quickly in the spring than others. I'd say at least a trade gallon, which is 3 quarts capacity, and generally about 6.5" top diameter by 7+" deep. Keep an eye on the drainage holes late next spring, especially on cool season grasses, and in summer on warm season grasses. If you see roots starting to come out, pot them up or plant them out.

I don't know about those Jobes fert spikes...isn't 1/pot too much? Sorry, I don't know much about them - used ones many years ago & didn't like them. When did you out the spikes in - when planting the seeds or later? Are you going to plant them out in garden?
