Sigh.. I wish! (Real Estate)
Comments (29)I like older houses so this one tugs at my heartstrings a bit; i totally get it! I will say though, that a lot of the surrounding areas are depressed. We have a woman who helps with the kids and cooks for us, and her daughter just bought a farmhouse up there. Very charming, nice barns, acreage, etc. But also backs up to Rt87, and, from what I hear, a lot of dilapidated farmhouses nearby. Even New Paltz, which I remembered as cutesy, is a little shabby on the edges nowadays. Mohonk has such a gorgeous site, do the Smileys still run it and keep it dry? Last time I was there they'd added a nice spa but the food was still disappointing (and the carpets appeared to be ... original is the nicest word I can find for it!) But apart from all that, you should be in a Mohonk commercial! Yowza, MizM...See MoreReal Estate Question - Who owns the house?
Comments (54)Lukki, I surely understand what you are saying - and I don't get any of this either. What I have to do right now is believe my son. I am thinking he may be misinformed, but I don't believe he is lying to us. I am still thinking that when I sign the title over, it will have both of their names on it. I do not know what I will do then. My sister is also on the title; I cannot even imagine her reaction. She does not know what has transpired over the last two weeks. I do not know what her parents are thinking either. They are on the other side of the country and I have met them twice. Our offer of money was way before theirs, so it would seem to me that they might have contacted us?? They know at the moment this is my house. If I were them, I wouldn't be putting a penny in. Kswl, this is not a new situation. When he first offered to buy the house, my sister and I sat down with both of them and explained the terms of the sale, which were basically the price and title. No other strings were attached. So she knew the terms from day 1. But you are right, no outcome will satisfy all parties. The whole situation is horrible. I have tried and tried - we all have, and when any one of us wants to give up on her, I say try harder. We have all bit our tongues and tried to keep the peace. My son defends her every move - and can explain away any of her antics, FB postings, etc. She is both the antagonizer and the victim. I think he feels the need to take care of her. But at this point, at least we see our son, not as much as we would like, but we do. He is the youngest and we always seemed to have the closest relationship with him. Unfortunately, not anymore and there is nothing we can do about it. I don't know what I will do if both names are on the title when I have to sign. I just don't know, but I do know that whatever happens, this nightmare will be over by June 1st. Thanks to all of you for your support! Great day to all!!...See MoreWhy no house floorplans in real estate listings in the U.S.?
Comments (43)I must be the oddball, I'm willing to overlook a bad floor plan, if the space, location, view is good, I'll remodel the interior. To me, bad layout is one of the deal breakers, if it cant be fixed/changed. That would bug me forever. What did you see from the floor plans that eliminated the homes? One of my dealbreakers is running into the stairs when you open the front door (crowds the foyer too much). This can be shown in photos, but often is not. Layout would show it and save a trip. Example 1: A house had 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and I think 3 living areas mentioned. Upon viewing, the bedrooms were tiny and the living areas were oversized, and the layout was such that you couldn't carve from the living areas to make another bedroom. Example 2: A house had 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and living and family rooms. But the 2nd bath was a tiny powder room off the master bedroom, and expanding it would have meant cutting into the kitchen. In both cases, a floor plan would have let me play with remodeling options, and I would have been able to quickly figure out that it wasn't feasible. And no, the room sizes in and of themselves aren't sufficient info. Because we moved walls to right-size rooms before. But until you see the floor plan, you don't know if walls can be moved....See MoreDo We Need a Real Estate Pro to Build a House?
Comments (14)What the agent can do is guide you on optional construction items that would impact resale. Hardwoods here - yes, worth it on resale. Generator hookup - not worth it. Etc.... That being said, it isn't worth it. But I have seen some "horrible for resale" custom houses built and one could argue that a realtor would have strongly advised against some of those decisions. Doing our 3rd build without an agent currently....See Morebeaglesdoitbetter
