what kind of cat litter do you use?
Comments (21)Everclean clumps really well. I've never noticed it stuck on my cat's paws. I use the Booda litter boxes so tracking is minimal but it's really the consistency of most clumping litter. It just contains odors much better and it lasts a lot longer. As mentioned, there's a good amount of dust when you first pour some in but I just keep the cats away from it while it settles so no one is actively inhaling it. I wish I could find a natural litter that works but I haven't been able to. I don't like the idea of them breathing in the dust but the natural stuff just can't control the odor for my 3 cats....See MoreHow to retrain a cat to use the litter box
Comments (3)This would cost you about $100, but you could purchase a large dog crate and fix it up with litter box/pan, food, and water. Put the crate somewhere where it won't bother you. Keep her inside for several hours at a time. She'll have room to move and will likely start using her litter again. I have one of these big dog crates in my kitchen, and I bring my one mean cat in at night and bed her down inside. She is separate from the indoor cats (can't harass them), warm and safe. She has come to love this crate because it belongs to her, and she knows that it is her safe, secure night-time spot. Good luck....See MorePreventing cat from using garden as litter box
Comments (21)OP "-Has anyone established an outdoor litter box and been successful?" I'm thinking the answer is no. You obviously have more of something than most of us. I remember a really long, heated thread about DETERRENTS several years ago. I think this is it: Cat using raised beds as litterbox 2011 Believe it or not, a raccoon finally took care of "my" cat. FWIW, he was NOT a "sweet thing". I would turn the hose on him and he would open his mouth and drink....See MoreTraining a dog to use a litter box?
Comments (17)I've had 2 toy breeds that at some point in their lives were unable to go outside, both successfully trained to use pee pads. If you decide to try the litter box, please do not use cat litter. As my vet explained to me, dogs are curious, and will stick their noses into lots of things, including cat litter, where the litter sticks on the nose, the dog licks it, and the litter is swallowed. This can lead to the litter swelling in the intestinal tract and can lead to blockage, which if left untreated might kill a dog. I'm not familiar with dog specific litter, so I can't speak about it. My vet is pretty strict, and advised me to keep all cat litter boxes at a height, away from my dog's access. I've a feeling some have dogs, and cats with litter boxes, and perhaps the dogs swallowed a bit of litter without harmful side affects, but I'd not take the risk. Annegriet, some dogs need a defined space (this could just be a box with pee pads in it, or a small tray around pee pads. Some dogs simply go on a pad with no boundaries. I've tried the paper pads, which I far prefer for convenience, but for a while I tried these washable 'human' incontinence pads. I was washing and drying pads daily with no time for much else so I stopped - and it was actually more costly. A friend has a large older lab who suffers from mild dementia, and her dog now uses a space with 4 large pee pads - although she sometimes 'forgets' where to 'go' due to the sun-downers. ETA: I second maifleur01 comment: often one sees changes in dog feces better when it's on a pad, which can lead to early detection/diagnosis of health issues. However, I wouldn't recommend pads only for a healthy active dog... going outside is natural, and the exercise is good for them :-)...See Moremaifleur01
